Forgotten Disney Movie With 78% RT Rating Makes Surprise Comeback on Streaming

Holes has suddenly gained popularity again 22 years after its release, as the underrated Disney movie is currently trending on streaming. Based on Louis Sachar’s 1998 novel, Holes is a neo-Western comedy drama directed by Andrew Davis, which follows a group of kids at a juvenile detention camp in Texas, where inmates are forced to dig holes as punishment.

The 2003 film features a young Shia LaBeouf as the lead, Stanley Yelnats IV, with Sigourney Weaver starring as the camp’s cruel Warden Walker. Grossing $71.4 million on a $17 million budget, Holes was a critical and commercial success, earning a strong 78% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Yet, the cult movie is fairly underrated compared to other Disney classics.

However, according to data from FlixPatrol, Holes has recently become a bit of a streaming success on Hulu, just over two decades since the movie was originally released. Ranking at number 13, Holes holds a steady position in Hulu’s Top 15 Movies in between two comedies, sitting just above Ted at number 14, and below Tammy at number 12.

Our Take On Hole’s Streaming Success

Considering it has been 22 years since the film’s release, it is rather surprising to see Holes rank among the top-streamed movies on Hulu. However, the sudden spike in popularity for this 2000s cult classic Disney movie may be due to the recently announced Holes reboot show in development for Disney+ with writers Liz Phang and Drew Goddard.

The Holes TV adaptation is reportedly said to be a gender-swap of the original, with Stanley Yelnats reimagined as a young girl at Camp Green Lake.

With rumors circulating about the upcoming Holes TV adaptation, many are taking the time to revisit the 2003 original on Hulu. This is because the neo-Western comedy drama was a beloved film for many growing up in the 2000s, and even earned Shia LeBeouf a significant boost in his early career, making it a must-watch for fans of the actor.

In fact, Louis Sachar’s movie has even proven itself as a timeless coming-of-age story that has stood the test of time as Holes was given a surprising accuracy score by a desert expert. Speaking about the movie depicting hard-to-reach water sources in a desert, survival expert Les Stroud gave the film an 8 out of 10 in terms of accuracy.

20 years since the movie first released, it’s clear to see that many people still appreciate this underrated Disney film, hailing it as a cult classic. Furthermore, with the upcoming TV adaptation inspiring heatwaves, as well as growing nostalgia from fans, it makes sense that Disney’s Holes is doing so well on streaming, with many revisiting coming-of-age classics this summer.
