Lilo & Sтιтch has now blown past other Disney movies to enter an important all-time box office chart. The Disney live-action film has continued to exceed expectations after its release over Memorial Day weekend. Lilo & Sтιтch has been getting great reviews, turning around Disney’s adaptation reputation after Snow White.
The movie had a strong opening weekend, topping the box office by a long sH๏τ. Even as other kid-oriented movies such as Elio and How to Train Your Dragon have been released, Lilo & Sтιтch has continued to have box office momentum. This has led to the confirmation of Lilo & Sтιтch 2.
As per Box Office Mojo, Lilo & Sтιтch is now in the top 60 highest-grossing movies of all time. At the time of writing, it has collected a worldwide gross of over $974 million. This allowed it to pᴀss previous Disney hits The Jungle Book and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, pushing into the top 60.
The Numbers also positions Lilo & Sтιтch within the top 30 highest-grossing Disney movies of all time. This is an impressive list that includes even Marvel тιтles such as ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine and The Avengers.
What This Means For Lilo & Sтιтch
The Film Could Cross $1 Billion
Lilo & Sтιтch still has the opportunity to rise even further on the lifetime gross chart. It is just over $1 million behind its next compeтιтor, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, and not that far behind Disney’s 2019 version of The Lion King. This also means that the adaptation is close to the coveted $1 billion mark. Some of Disney’s live-action adaptations have crossed this threshold before, including the 2010 version of Alice in Wonderland.
This box office milestone would cement Lilo & Sтιтch as a true hit. The film has, at this point, gotten well past the also high-achieving A Minecraft Movie. It is nowhere near the Chinese animated sequel Ne Zha 2, so it will not become the highest-grossing film of the year, but its No. 2 spot is still impressive.
Our Take On This Lilo & Sтιтch Record
This Is Great News For Disney
These box office milestones bode well for the future of the Lilo & Sтιтch franchise and Disney adaptations as a whole. Technically, Disney has not confirmed that Lilo & Sтιтch 2 will get a theatrical release. However, this big success makes its theatrical prospects an almost sure thing, as the company has seen its potential.
Barring any major goof-ups, Lilo & Sтιтch 2 could be as successful or even better than the first film. This could start a new adaptation franchise for Disney, which has mostly stuck to one-off movies in this subgenre. Lilo & Sтιтch is a sign of hope for Disney as it continues with the franchise and other live-action adaptations.
