I’m Convinced James Gunn Is Setting Up Wonder Woman’s Replacement Before Her DCU Debut

Wonder Woman is coming to the new DC Universe, but a new update suggests that the franchise might already be setting up her replacement before she even debuts. Gal Gadot will not return as Wonder Woman. Diana Prince will be recast for the DCU’s Chapter One, and while she did not have a project announced with the franchise, she does now.

Recently, DC Studios’ creative chief, James Gunn, confirmed that a Wonder Woman movie is being written. This will mark the first film for the character since Gadot’s Wonder Woman 3 was scrapped. There is still no word on when the script for the project will be ready, but Gunn said it is a priority alongside Batman’s The Brave and the Bold.

The new Wonder Woman will be cast once the script for her solo movie is finished, as has been the norm for most DCU projects. However, while the Wonder Woman movie might be a few years away, it seems like the character’s DCU corner is being heavily discussed. A new DC update suggests it might even include Wonder Woman’s replacement.

James Gunn Has Teased Another Wonder Woman’s DCU Debut

Diana Prince’s Sister Could Soon Join Her In The New DC Franchise

After his recent confirmation that a Wonder Woman movie was in development, Gunn teased that another Wonder Woman could join the DCU. According to the director of DC’s new Superman movie, he is “very aware of Nubia,” teasing that there might be plans for Nubia to appear in future DCU projects. However, he did not say what they could be.

Still, the fact that Nubia is on Gunn’s radar for the DCU is exciting. Another positive aspect is how Gunn claimed that fans who want to see Nubia enter the franchise could be happy in “the not-too-distant future.” Those comments make it seem like Gunn has more or less a clear plan of what he wants to see from Nubia.

Wonder Woman had a cameo in a non-speaking role in the animated Creature Commandos.

While Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman make up DC’s iconic Trinity in the comics, all the three characters have had legacy heroes replace them at some point. Nubia was one of those who took over for Diana Prince as Wonder Woman. Gunn’s words leave the door open for that to happen in the DCU’s future after both characters debut.

Nubia Would Be Perfect For DC’s Paradise Lost Series

James Gunn’s DC Universe Has Big Plans For Wonder Woman’s Corner

James Gunn might not have announced a new Wonder Woman movie during DC’s slate reveal for the DCU’s Chapter One. However, the studio did include a project that ties directly to Diana Prince’s world. That project was Paradise Lost, a TV show that is said to focus on the Amazons of Themyscira with a dark, Game of Thrones-like political scenario.

However, the series is not expected to feature Wonder Woman…

Beyond that original announcement, not much is known about Paradise Lost. However, the series is not expected to feature Wonder Woman, as the story is said to play out years before Diana Prince was born. Based on Gunn’s new Wonder Woman comments, I believe the door is open for the DC series to introduce Wonder Woman’s replacement to the franchise.

In DC Comics, Nubia is older than Diana, having served as an important warrior for the Amazons before Diana ever became Wonder Woman. While that order is messy due to DC’s many continuity rewrites, Wonder Woman: Historia, which James Gunn praised, helped show just how crucial to the Amazons Nubia was before Diana. The DCU could take notes for Paradise Lost.

How Nubia Could Be Diana Prince’s Replacement In The DCU

The Two Characters Share Comic Book History

Nubia could be Diana’s replacement in a few ways. Since Paradise Lost was conceived as the first Wonder Woman-adjacent project in the DCU, Nubia could be its lead. That way, audiences would view her as the first Wonder Woman in the franchise despite the fact that Diana is ready to debut in a solo movie. It could go beyond that.

In the comics, Nubia ᴀssumed the Wonder Woman mantle when Diana was presumed ᴅᴇᴀᴅ. Over the next decade of DC releases, Gunn could play with that concept, and if Paradise Lost and other projects help build up Nubia before then, she could be accepted as the Wonder Woman replacement. That said, both heroes could also co-exist with the тιтle.

After Diana returned in the comics, not ᴅᴇᴀᴅ as the others thought, she allowed Nubia to continue being Wonder Woman alongside her. Spider-Man: No Way Home recently showed the power of having multiple heroes with the same тιтle working together. With solid buildup, Nubia could become just as popular as Diana in terms of being the DCU’s Wonder Woman.

The New DC Universe Can Focus On Wonder Woman’s Extended Family

The Character’s Family Of Heroes Has Immense Potential For The DCU

Wonder Girls Cᴀssie Sandsmark, Yara Flor, and Donna Troy

I like the idea of both characters sharing the Wonder Woman mantle in the future. Diana Prince’s corner of the DC Universe in the comics is rich, possessing many characters brimming with potential. Nubia’s teased DCU debut by Gunn could be the first step to bringing the rest of the Wonder Woman family to live-action, which I would love to see.

All the Wonder Girls could come to the franchise, with Donna Troy and Cᴀssie Sandsmark being perfect for stories that involve other corners of the DCU, as they were both prominent members of different iterations of the Teen тιтans. Recently, Gunn talked about how there are DCU projects being developed in different countries, mentioning Brazil. That is Yara Flor’s home.

The concept of a Wonder Woman family in live-action makes even more sense when analyzing the rest of the DCU. Multiple Green Lanterns will appear in HBO’s Lanterns. Superman has his cousin, Supergirl. As for Batman, Damian Wayne and more Bat-Family members will show up in The Brave and the Bold. As such, Nubia’s future alongside Wonder Woman looks good.

The Wonder Woman franchise is part of the larger DC Extended Universe (DCEU), focusing on Diana Prince, an Amazonian princess and warrior who becomes the superhero Wonder Woman. The franchise began with the 2017 film Wonder Woman, which was a critical and commercial success, followed by Wonder Woman 1984 in 2020. These films explore Diana’s origins, her role in world conflicts, and her personal journey in adapting to the world of humans. The franchise is known for its strong feminist themes, action-packed sequences, and its portrayal of Wonder Woman as a symbol of peace and justice.
