Oscar-Winning Actress, 42, Playing A “Gaga-Taylor Swift Hybrid” In New A24 Movie Could Break A 13-Year Streak

A24 has gained a following among both critics and audiences over the past decade. The company was founded in 2012 and has been making high-quality independent films ever since. They have crafted a particular niche in the horror film genre, distributing films like Hereditary and Talk to Me.

Another important niche for A24 is related to the Academy Awards. The studio got its first Best Picture win with Barry Jenkins’ 2016 film Moonlight. This came after they had gotten a nomination the previous year for Room.

That track record has only grown stronger with the subsequent win for Everything Everywhere All At Once. A24 movies are now apt to score nominations in multiple categories every year. Last year, nominated films included The Brutalist and Sing Sing. Now, a new A24 film gives a previous nominee hope of getting recognition again in a major category.

Anne Hathaway Is Playing A Pop Star In A24’s Mother Mary

And Her Role Has A Unique Description

Mother Mary is an upcoming A24 epic drama directed by David Lowery, who has worked with A24 on films such as A Ghost Story and The Green Knight. The film will follow the relationship between a fictional musician and a fashion designer. Leading the cast is Anne Hathaway, with a supporting team that includes Jessica Brown Findlay, Hunter Schafer, Sian Clifford, Alba Baptista, and Michaela Coel.

Hathaway will play the leading pop star in the film, who goes by the stage name Mother Mary. The leading character was recently described in a Vogue article as a “Gaga-Taylor Swift hybrid.” Hathaway also explained more about devising the character in the interview, which she did through learning choreography and working closely with director, Lowery.

The description makes Hathaway’s character sound pretty fascinating. Both Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift are pop icons, so any role that combines the two personas in some way seems like an intriguing one.

Anne Hathaway’s Mother Mary Role Could Bring Awards Consideration Once More

It Has Been Over A Decade Since Her Last Nomination

A24’s strong influence on the Academy Awards circuit could push Mother Mary towards award attention. This is especially true given it sounds like Hathaway will be asked to play an exaggerated, broad, and demanding role that the Academy would be apt to recognize.

However, it has now been thirteen years since Hathaway won her Oscar, and she has not been nominated since.

Hathaway also has a history with the Academy Awards. She was previously a Best Actress nominee for Rachel Getting Married and won Best Supporting Actress for Les Misérables.

However, it has now been thirteen years since Hathaway won her Oscar, and she has not been nominated since. She needs the right kind of film to get the push towards another nomination. With an intriguing premise and the backing of Oscar-frequently nominated studio A24, Mother Mary just might be the push Hathaway needs.
