Dune 3 Set To Be The Second Movie Ever To Achieve This IMAX Feat (After A Christopher Nolan Epic)

IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond has revealed an exciting new detail about Dune 3. Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two was one of the most critically and commercially successful movies of 2024, and thankfully the acclaimed filmmaker will return to direct the third movie. The upcoming Dune: Part Three will be Villeneuve’s last film in the sci-fi franchise, but it seems like it will be the biggest entry yet.

Timothée Chalamet will reprise his role as Paul Atreides in the third movie. His character will serve as the Emperor in the next entry, but based on the ending of Dune: Part Two, the Bene Gesserit and even Zendaya’s Chani will likely conspire to dethrone him. This will make for an epic conclusion to the trilogy, which Villeneuve will shoot entirely with IMAX cameras.

In an interview with CNBC, Gelfond revealed that the entirety of Dune 3 will be sH๏τ with IMAX cameras, which is a feat that has only been achieved by Christopher Nolan’s next movie. In the interview, Gelfond expressed how excited he is for Dune 3, as well as Bond 26, which Villeneuve is also directing. Read his full comments and watch the interview below:

He’s so creative, he’s making the next Dune with IMAX cameras, he’s filming the whole thing. So we haven’t started talking yet, but I’m praying that that’s the case with Bond.

What Being SH๏τ Entirely With IMAX Cameras Means For Dune 3

Dune 3 Will Be Even Bigger Than The Previous Two Movies

This year, Nolan’s The Odyssey, which is set for a July 17, 2026 release, became the first movie ever to be sH๏τ entirely with IMAX cameras. Since Nolan has been a longtime IMAX advocate and is often regarded as one of the most visionary filmmakers of our time, it’s fitting that he is the first director to film an entire movie with IMAX cameras.

While Greig Fraser sH๏τ the previous two films in the sci-fi franchise, Linus Sandgren will be the cinematographer for Dune 3.

Based on the trailer for The Odyssey that is playing before showings of the recently released Jurᴀssic World Rebirth, it looks like Nolan’s next movie will be visually breathtaking. However, just like Nolan, Villeneuve is also often recognized as one of the most visionary filmmakers currently working. Therefore, it’s amazing that he will be the second director to accomplish this IMAX feat.

Interestingly, Dune 3 may have a slightly different look than the first two movies. While Greig Fraser sH๏τ the previous two films in the sci-fi franchise, Linus Sandgren will be the cinematographer for Dune 3. There’s no need to worry, though, since Sandgren is also an amazing cinematographer who has sH๏τ movies like No Time to Die, First Man, and La La Land.

Our Take On Dune 3 Being SH๏τ Entirely With IMAX Cameras

Dune 3 Will Be An Amazing Theatrical Experience

Even though there have been some changes to the creative team for Dune 3, the fact that Villeneuve is still spearheading the project makes me confident that it will be just as good as the second film. Practically every movie Villeneuve has directed has been incredible, so I can’t wait to see the third Dune film, which is currently set for a December 18, 2026 release date.

Dune: Part Two was arguably the most amazing theatrical experience of last year, and the fact that the next movie will be sH๏τ entirely with IMAX cameras suggests that it could be even better. With The Odyssey and Dune 3, cinephiles are in for several treats in 2026. Therefore, after hearing this news, I’m now even more excited about Dune: Part Three.
