Spider-Man: Brand New Day Can Finally Show A Side Of The Punisher We Haven’t Seen In 9 Years

Jon Bernthal’s Punisher is set to appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, where he will finally have the chance to address a major part of the MCU. Tom Holland’s Peter Parker has teamed up with other MCU heroes such as Tony Stark, Doctor Strange, and Team Iron Man. Starting a new chapter in his life, Peter will cross paths with the Punisher in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, though Frank Castle may not be as friendly as Spidey’s previous allies.

Besides its growing cast, little is known about Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘s plot. Whether the Punisher will be a friend or a foe to Spider-Man is yet to be confirmed. Regardless, Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle will co-star in a story just as different for him as it is for Peter Parker.

Jon Bernthal’s Punisher Will Finally Be Able To Voice His Thoughts On The Avengers

Frank Castle Must Have A Lot To Say About Earth’s Mightiest Heroes

Netflix’s Marvel shows were quite self-contained despite taking place in the MCU from the beginning. The Punisher and Daredevil’s opposing philosophies have clashed since they first met in Daredevil season 2, and they’ve been constantly at odds ever since. But while Frank Castle has criticized vigilantes like Daredevil for years, he has never even mentioned the Avengers. If there’s a street-level character who must have controversial opinions on the Avengers, it’s definitely the cynical, no-nonsense Punisher.

After his first official MCU appearance in Daredevil: Born Again, Bernthal’s Frank Castle is finally able to address the existence of superheroes. Given that the Punisher and Daredevil’s different approaches to heroism have been the subject of most of their discussions, the ideological collision between the Punisher and Spider-Man could be even more intense. Frank Castle’s comments on the Battle of New York, Iron Man, the Avengers’ failure to stop Thanos, and the Blip are not to be missed.

Frank Castle’s Respect For Heroes Like Captain America Is Key To His Worldview

The Punisher Hates Many Superheroes But Holds Others In High Regards

Jon Bernthal's Frank Castle and Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock team up in Daredevil season 2

In the comics, the Punisher sees Captain America as the only true moral compᴀss in the superhero scene. This reverence is so strong that even in the midst of the Civil War conflict, Castle refuses to fight Cap, instead taking a beating without raising a hand. Conversely, the Punisher distrusts Iron Man for his government allegiance, and initially despises Spider-Man’s idealism. Over time, the Punisher develops a reluctant respect for Spider-Man’s courage, even if he still considers his methods naive.

The Punisher’s Spider-Man Crossover Is An Event 37 Years In The Making

The Punisher Is One Of Marvel’s Earliest Live-Action Movie Protagonists

The Punisher may be famously a street-level Marvel hero, but the idea of seeing Frank Castle cross over with other heroes on the big screen has existed since at least 1989. Dolph Lundgren first played Frank Castle in 1989’s The Punisher, followed by Thomas Jane’s portrayal in the 2004 reboot and Ray Stevenson’s grittier take in 2008’s Punisher: War Zone. While all three Punisher movies have been standalone adaptations, fan interest in potential crossovers has remained high.

Having made his big-screen debut long before Spider-Man and Daredevil, the Punisher’s MCU integration has taken too long. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is an ideal place to have Punisher address Marvel’s many superheroes. Although Daredevil: Born Again marked Jon Bernthal’s first proper MCU role, Spider-Man: Brand New Day will mirror the Punisher’s Marvel Comics debut, where the wall-crawler was Frank Castle’s first-ever enemy.
