G.I. Joe Movie Future Gets Disappointing Update As Snake Eyes Star Remains Open To Returning

The future of G.I. Joe gets a disappointing update, but Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins star Henry Golding remains open to returning. Based on the popular action figures, Snake Eyes premiered in 2021 and marked the first G.I. Joe installment since Retaliation, which featured Bruce Willis and Dwayne Johnson and was released eight years prior.

The newer G.I. Joe movie, directed by Robert Schwentke, explores a drifter (Golding) who learns from the Arashikage while seeking vengeance for the murder of his father. Despite a strong cast and compelling story, Snake Eyes failed to resonate at the box office, but there may be a door open for Golding and others to come back.

During a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Golding mentioned speculation surrounding Transformers and Snake Eyes, but revealed that he does not know if it will happen, or if a crossover would include a different G.I. Joe. However, Golding still expressed interest in returning, adding that “there was so much potential.” Check out his comments below:

I know there’s stuff happening — there’s rumors of Transformers and Snake Eyes. I don’t know if they’ll just skip our G.I. Joe and go back to the original G.I. Joe, like, who knows? I think we had a rough, rough run on that one.

I would love to. I think there was so much potential. And I think it’s such a great character and it’s such a great universe. So, I do hope that they bring it back just for the fans, you know? I don’t have to be in there.

What Henry Golding’s Update Means For G.I. Joe & Snake Eyes

A Transformers Crossover Is Happening In Some Capacity

While a G.I. Joe and Transformers movie has been announced, it remains unclear whether characters from Snake Eyes will return. The crossover is set up in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts when Anthony Ramos’ Noah Diaz is recruited by G.I. Joe, and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura previously teased that “Joes” would be incorporated into a Transformers story.

Transformers may introduce new G.I. Joe characters, but Snake Eyes‘ ending could still carry over into another movie, which Golding seems hopeful will happen. In the final moments, Snake Eyes discovers that his father was part of G.I. Joe, and he was recruited himself. Meanwhile, having splintered their friendship, Tommy (Andrew Koji) seemingly embraces a villainous role, becoming Storm Shadow.

Our Take On Snake Eyes’ Future

The Movie Underwhelmed Commercially

Henry Golding looking worried in Snake Eyes GI Joe Origins

Considering how poorly Snake Eyes performed upon release, a sequel seems unlikely to happen. Snake Eyes managed to generate around $40 million at the box office, which is substantially lower than earlier G.I. Joe installments; Retaliation earned over $375 million globally. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts also underperformed, but including G.I. Joes could help the follow-up.

Looking ahead, it will be interesting to see if any familiar faces from G.I. Joe or Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins appear in the Transformers crossover, despite this box office bomb. Golding is remaining open to possibly returning, and it could be fun to see Snake Eyes take on a new role as a G.I. Joe, alongside Autobots.
