KPop Demon Hunters Sets A Major Record As Netflix Eyes Award Potential

KPop Demon Hunters, as a movie, has proven to be a huge streaming success for Netflix, but its musical status is raising it even higher. The animated fantasy adventure inspired by K-pop and Korean mythology follows a K-pop girl group, who double as demon hunters, using the power of their voices to shield humanity.

While the movie continues to trend on Netflix, KPop Demon Hunters’ soundtrack is just as popular on music platforms. Highlights include “Golden” and “What It Sounds Like,” both of which illustrate the insecurities and fear experienced by Rumi (Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong), and Zoey (Ji-young-Yoo), and how they overcome them.

KPop Demon Hunters’ soundtrack hit new milestones this past week, as fictional demon boy band The Saja Boys’ track “Your Idol” reached No. 2 on Spotify’s U.S. ranking on July 3, making it the highest-charting track by a K-pop boy group ever, surpᴀssing BTS’s “Dynamite” (via Vulture).

Meanwhile, the demon-hunter group Huntr/x’s song “Golden” is at No. 3, tied with Blackpink for the highest-charting song for a female K-pop group. Netflix is more focused on the girl group’s songs for awards season, as the company has also announced its intention to submit “Golden” for consideration for Best Original Song come the 2026 Academy Awards (via Variety).

What These Accolades Mean For KPop Demon Hunters

KPop Demon Hunters sits at 95% on Rotten Tomatoes and has been in Netflix’s Top 10 for weeks now — it is safe to say that it has cemented itself as a movie that appealed to both critics and audiences. However, these records and potential awards are additional, official certifications of its quality that will further elevate its legacy.

This is amid questions about a KPop Demon Hunters sequel swirling, which could turn the whole thing into a successful franchise. Overall, the hype surrounding this new movie is going nowhere and may also further boost the popularity of K-pop with Western audiences.

The voice actors of the main characters in KPop Demon Hunters do not perform the songs. Huntr/x’s songs are performed by EJAE (Rumi), Audrey Nuna (Mira), and Rei Ami (Zoey). The Saja Boys’ vocals are Andrew Choi, Neckwav, Danny Chung, Kevin Woo, and samUIL Lee.

It seems unlikely that KPop Demon Hunters is going to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature or Best Original Song, with too many exciting animated movies coming out in 2025 and the all-but guaranteed win for one of Wicked 2‘s original songs. But the nominations will be a boon for the Netflix movie regardless.

Our Take On KPop Demon Hunters Being A Record-Breaker & Awards Potential

I Love That This Movie Has Been Such A Hit

As a fresh animated adventure that fully leverages its medium and blends genres and inspirations, I hope to see KPop Demon Hunters nab a Best Animated Feature nomination, even if I will probably end up rooting for something else to win. Its release and reception have been a blast, and it should get some more highbrow recognition.

Meanwhile, the soundtrack is electric and uplifting, and people seem to be enjoying the experience of listening to these songs, still backed by the context of the story, even when they are not watching the movie. We haven’t seen the last of KPop Demon Hunters, which could still continue to set new records.
