Mission: Impossible 8’s Box Office Milestone Is Close To Overtaking Sequel With 94% RT Score

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning has hit another major box office milestone. The eighth installment continued the dire mission from ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Reckoning, where the Enтιтy remains the biggest threat to Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his team. The Final Reckoning debuted at $64 million at the domestic box office and has since been hitting key milestones in the last two months.

Now, according to ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, The Final Reckoning is going to surpᴀss the $190 million milestone at the domestic box office. With a total reaching $191 million after nearly seven weeks in theaters, the eighth installment is close to overtaking Rogue Nation, which made a total of $195 million during its original box office run. As of right now, it’s the fifth highest-grossing movie in the franchise at the domestic box office.

Why Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning Is Not Quite A Box Office Success?

The Supposed Final Installment Has Not Hit Break Even

Despite The Final Reckoning closing in on Rogue Nation in the franchise’s domestic charts, the latest installment is not exactly the box-office success that it wishes it could be. This predicament stems from the movie having an expensive $400 million budget.

Mission: Impossible Movies

Domestic Box Office

Global Box Office

Mission: Impossible (1996)

$180,981,886

$457,697,994

Mission: Impossible 2 (2000)

$215,409,889

$549,588,516

Mission: Impossible III (2006)

$133,501,348

$399,387,745

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011)

$209,397,903

$694,713,230

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015)

$195,042,377

$688,858,992

Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018)

$220,159,104

$786,626,183

Mission: Impossible – ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Reckoning (2023)

$172,640,980

$565,696,302

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (2025)

$191,400,000

$567,000,000

Typically, a movie needs to make two and a half times the amount of the budget to break even, before going into profitable margins. Currently, The Final Reckoning has a global total of just over $560 million, which is nowhere close to hitting the break-even point. Furthermore, those chances seem unlikely as the movie’s box office momentum has slowed down as more new releases drop in theaters.

On the other hand, the eighth installment does have a good chance of surpᴀssing Rogue Nation, although there is no guarantee. However, on the global side, it is expected to become the fourth-highest-grossing Mission: Impossible movie, overtaking ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Reckoning. Thus, in a way, the latest milestone is bittersweet since it still has final legs to climb the franchise’s highest-grossing charts. However, Fallout will remain the highest-grossing installment, which made $786 million.

Our Take On Mission: Impossible 8’s Latest Milestone

It Seems That The Box Office Is Impacting Cruise’s Future Projects

The lukewarm box office won’t have too much of an impact on Cruise’s future with the Mission: Impossible franchise since The Final Reckoning was marketed as the final installment. However, it appears that the lackluster box office of the last two movies is having an impact on Cruise’s endeavors in new projects outside the franchise.

It was recently reported by Puck that his upcoming thriller, Deep, with Ana de Armas, is facing some problems after Warner Bros. was not willing to budge on the proposed budget of $275 million. Reportedly, the executives found the ask too high and were not willing to go over $230 million. This has resulted in the project being halted as Cruise attempts to seek another studio despite prep and pre-visualization having been done.

While this is just one case, this just shows some consequences that Cruise may face as a result of the lackluster box office with the last two Mission: Impossible installments. Thankfully, the star already has a few other projects lined up, alongside hopes of a Top Gun 3. While it’s unclear how much more this box office performance will impact Cruise, hopefully, there is a chance to bounce back with the next release.
