Superman star David Corenswet recently opened up about which DC heroes he wants his Man of Steel to team up with on the big screen. Directed by James Gunn, the film follows a young Superman balancing heroics with his career in journalism and budding romance with Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) while Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) plots his downfall.

Releasing July 11, 2025, it is set to launch the new DC Universe. As a result, Superman sees Corenswet’s Superman alongside Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason/Metamorpho, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders/Hawgirl, and Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt/Mister Terrific. Having these heroes all appear together onscreen is meant to make the DCU feel more lived-in.

Nonetheless, the film will not be introducing the other two-thirds of the DC trinity, Batman and Wonder Woman, though both are reportedly planned to join the franchise soon. When asked who Corenswet wanted his Superman to meet, neither of them were at the top of his list.

Rather, he felt a Batman-adjacent character could bring out a new side of Superman. The actor explained: “I think, like, a Nightwing character. One of Batman’s proteges, I think, would be really cool because Superman has good dad energy. I’d like to see his uncle energy.”

Dick Grayson And Clark Kent Have A Long History In DC Comics

Though this relationship has rarely made it into adaptations of Superman and Nightwing, the two have a unique friendship. Given that Dick Grayson has been a part of the Batman mythos since the Dark Knight’s early days, he shares the same connections with the broader DC world, but from the perspective of a child/teenager who grew up in it.

For example, Dick and Clark have something of a mentor-mentee dynamic, but it’s very different from the former’s relationship with his adoptive father. Superman instills hope into Robin, and his encouragement helps shape Dick into the hero he eventually becomes as Nightwing.

This dynamic is why Nightwing’s character blends morals from both Batman and Superman. Not to mention, Nightwing has Superman to thank for his name; it is derived from a legendary Kryptonian hero. In more recent years, Dick has repaid Clark by acting as a mentor to his son, Jon Kent.

Adapting this relationship to the screen in the DCU may be somewhat difficult given that its creators are opting for an older Batman and a younger Superman. If Bruce Wayne already has all four of his sons, Nightwing will be an adult upon his introduction to the franchise.

As such, he may not be much younger than Superman and their relationship would look pretty different. However, there is still potential for Corenswet’s Man of Steel to be a positive role model for the BatFamily, potentially for Damian Wayne or Tim Drake as Robin.
