Tim Burton Teases His Next Movie After $451M Beetlejuice 2 Hit

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice director Tim Burton has teased his next project following the overwhelming success of his 2024 sequel. Picking up 36 years after 1988’s original Beetlejuice, the long-anticipated follow-up to Burton’s cult comedy horror generated a healthy $451.9 million in worldwide box office against an original budget of $99 million.

Despite the considerable delay between the first and second installments in the franchise, there are already plans in place for Beetlejuice 3. In April of this year, Warner Bros. Pictures CEO Michael De Luca announced that work on a third film was set to commence shortly.

However, during a recent interview with Milenio, Burton suggested that his next project will see him return to animation. Having previously created The Nightmare Before Christmas, and directed Corpse Bride and Frankenweenie, the filmmaker says he hopes to have the script completed shortly and is “very excited” about it. Check out his comments below:

I am working on something that’s an animated project, yes. So hopefully I’ll have a script soon and then I’ll take it from there. But it’s something I’m very excited about.

What Tim Burton’s Comments Mean For Beetlejuice 3

The Director Seems To Have His Own Priorities

Despite Warner Bros.’ ᴀssertion that work on Beetlejuice 3 would commence shortly, Burton’s latest comments would suggest he currently has other priorities. Not only does he seem keen to pursue this latest animated project, but the director has also been attached to a remake of the 1958’s Attack of the Fifty-Foot Woman. However, he would later downplay that announcement.

Nonetheless, fans of Burton’s work will undoubtedly be keen to see him return to animation, given that it was the medium from which he first began his career. An outspoken champion of traditional stop-motion techniques, it is likely that Burton’s next project will continue to avoid the kind of computer-generated imagery of most modern animated features.

Exactly what this will mean for the Beetlejuice 3 timeline remains uncertain, but Warner Bros. will likely be looking to ensure that Burton does not lose sight of the threequel amidst his other projects. Neither the studio nor the audiences would be willing to wait another 36 years for a follow-up.

Our Take On Tim Burton’s Next Animated Movie

Don’t Expect The Nightmare Before Christmas 2

While Burton embarking on a new animated project will automatically raise questions about a potential The Nightmare Before Christmas sequel, it seems unlikely that this will be the film he is currently working on. Having previously suggested that the original movie is a “one-off thing,” the filmmaker appears to have no interest in returning to his most famous animated property.

Nonetheless, Burton is almost certain to inject his latest animation with the same kind of trademark imagery he is renowned for. Even though it might not be the follow-up to Beetlejuice Beetlejuice that some are hoping for, there is every reason to be excited about what the filmmaker is putting together.
