“I Was Stunned:” Spinal Tap 2’s Huge Cameos & New Story Teased By Iconic Director, 78

Director Rob Reiner has teased some major cameos that will be featured in Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, saying that the upcoming story left him “stunned.” The upcoming 2025 sequel to This Is Spinal Tap will be released 41 years after the original film, with Rob Reiner and most of the original cast members returning for Spinal Tap II: The End Continues.

In the original film, Rob Reiner played documentarian Marty DiBergi, a role he is reprising in the sequel. Speaking with Screen Rant’s Joe Deckelmeier for This Is Spinal Tap‘s 41st anniversary re-release, Reiner explained what his character was shocked to learn about the fictional band in Spinal Tap II.

Reiner teased that bad blood” caused Spinal Tap to not perform together for 15 years, and that he “was stunned to find out what actually happened” to the band. Reiner then explains that “Paul McCartney is in the movie, and so is Elton John,” with him teasing that the musicians will discuss what it is like performing at their age.

What Rob Reiner’s Comments Mean For Spinal Tap II

The Cameos Are One Of The Most Exciting Parts

There are still a lot of questions surrounding Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, but Rob Reiner’s comments answer a few of them. The fact that Spinal Tap has been separated for 15 years could explain why a sequel is happening now, with the story possibly following the band as they try to get back together.

It also gives a look into Marty DiBergi’s headspace. Since Marty is surprised to learn why Spinal Tap broke up, this means that the fictional documentarian probably hasn’t been keeping up with the band since the original film. Spinal Tap II is sure to have a lot of reveals as Marty dives further into the band’s history.

Reiner’s teases of cameos from musicians are incredibly exciting, with this being one of the most anticipated parts of the sequel. Several musicians have already been announced, and Spinal Tap II is sure to have a few more up its sleeve.

Our Take On Spinal Tap II’s Story

Will The Band Get Back Together?

The story is not the most important part of This Is Spinal Tap, as the mockumentary format is mostly an excuse for music-themed jokes to be told. However, it is nice to see that there is a narrative reason for a sequel to happen now, meaning that it shouldn’t just be a retread of the original.

Spinal Tap II: The End Continues has a lot of potential, and the idea of the band getting back together could lead to a тιԍнтer narrative framework. There are all kinds of famous stories of bands breaking up, and Spinal Tap II: The End Continues may be pulling from these.
