Charlize Theron’s Netflix Action Movie With 80% RT Score Lands On Global Charts As Sequel Release Nears

A movie released on Netflix five years ago, with an 80% Rotten Tomatoes score, has re-entered the global charts as its sequel prepares to drop. The Netflix global charts feature some interesting releases that are not always included on the regional charts in the United States.

One example is a movie that has just entered the Netflix top 10 globally, with 3.1 million views last week. Netflix doesn’t always promote upcoming releases, but for some that previously had huge success on the streamer, exceptions are made. This is especially true with The Old Guard franchise, starring Charlize Theron.

Another example is The Squid Game, which got a lot of promotion heading into its second season and ended up as the first series to ever rank number one on every country’s charts upon its release. Now, it is time for a Charlize Theron movie sequel to try to match that success.

What This Means For The Old Guard

The Old Guard Sequel Appears To Be Headed For Huge Success

The Old Guard 2 dropped on Netflix on July 3, and the fact that the first movie has already risen back into the global top 10 is good news for the sequel. The first movie starred Charlize Theron as Andy, an immortal warrior who leads a team dedicated to preventing global disasters from occurring by taking preemptive action.

However, their mission was compromised when people learned about their existence. A pharmaceutical company sent out mercenaries to capture them so they could create new drugs based on what they discovered from experimenting on them. The Old Guard ends with the reveal that another immortal warrior has resurfaced with a connection to Andy.

However, it appears the sequel is not going in that direction, and instead has Uma Thurman join the cast as a different ancient immortal warrior who feels that Andy and her team have betrayed their oath. Regardless, fans should revisit the first movie to catch up on what the team is about before watching The Old Guard 2.

The film did hit various regional charts, though, including Austria, Germany, Hungary, and more.

While The Old Guard is in the global top 10, it has not reentered the United States top 10, but that might change with the new movie now available. The film did hit various regional charts, though, including Austria, Germany, Hungary, and more.

Our Take On The Old Guard’s Netflix Success

The Old Guard Is One Of Netflix’s Better Franchises

This is excellent news for Charlize Theron and her Netflix franchise. Sadly, the franchise received some disappointing news when director Victoria Mahoney said she wouldn’t be back for a third movie, citing other contractual obligations. However, if The Old Guard’s renewed popularity with the arrival of the sequel is any indication, Netflix will likely want more anyway.

The first movie was a fantastic blend of sci-fi and action genres, and while the sequel’s reviews are not as high as those of the first film’s release, the Netflix audience will determine if there will be more to this story’s world. Its rise globally in the top 10 most-watched movies speaks volumes for The Old Guard.
