2025’s How to Train Your Dragon is poised to climb up the franchise’s box office chart for the first time. The movie is a live-action remake of DreamWorks’ 2010 animated movie, which is based on the children’s book series of the same name by Cressida Cowell and spawned a successful trilogy alongside a multimedia How to Train Your Dragon franchise.

Per The Numbers, How to Train Your Dragon has risen to a global box office total of $463.5 million, comprising $207.7 million from domestic theaters and $255.8 million from international markets. This makes it only the fifth movie of 2025 to pᴀss the $460 million milestone, behind Mission: Impossible 8, Lilo & Sтιтch, A Minecraft Movie, and Ne Zha 2.

This total also sees the live-action remake closing in on the $495.1 million gross earned by the original animated movie. Once it earns an additional $31.6 million and surpᴀsses that total, it will become the third highest-grossing installment in the four-film How to Train Your Dragon franchise.

It Is On Track To Keep Climbing

While 2025’s How to Train Your Dragon is still the lowest-grossing installment in the franchise, that will quickly change. Considering the fact that its most recent weekend, which was its third, saw it earning $19.4 million at the domestic box office alone, it should make an additional $31.6 million in next to no time.

However, it will have to make a lot more if it hopes to become the highest-grossing installment, as it will have to surpᴀss How to Train Your Dragon 2‘s $621.5 million, earning an additional $126.6 million once it pᴀsses the original movie.

After earning the best opening weekend of the franchise by far, the live-action remake has maintained its considerable lead over the previous movies. While it takes some time for movies to climb the charts this far into their runs, it seems destined to eventually become the highest-grossing installment by a wide margin.

In fact, if it stays on its current trajectory, it could potentially earn more than $930 million worldwide by the end of its run.

Given the stellar performance of the 2025 remake, it makes sense why DreamWorks greenlit the upcoming How to Train Your Dragon 2 before the new movie even hit theaters. In addition to performing well compared to previous installments, the movie has already more than justified its reported budget of $150 million.

In fact, How to Train Your Dragon is so successful that it may inspire DreamWorks to produce even more live-action remakes of some of their most popular franchises, as the 2025 movie was their first time attempting a live-action remake in the wake of Disney’s largely successful run of movies following that format.
