The new movie starring John Cena and Idris Elba has become an instant streaming hit. While both stars had their breakouts on television, they have since become well known for feature-length projects.

Cena got his start as a WWE wrestler, but he began acting in action movies starting in the 2000s, later expanding to comedies. Now, in addition to joining the Fast and Furious franchise in a major role, he has starred in тιтles including Bumblebee and The Suicide Squad, and John Cena movies have collectively grossed more than $5 billion.

Elba’s breakout role came when he played Stringer Bell on HBO’s The Wire. The six-time Emmy nominee also has a number of successful movies under his belt. In addition to playing Heimdall in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he has appeared in the Fast and Furious spinoff Hobbs & Shaw, voiced Knuckles in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, and more.

The Movie Is A Streaming Exclusive

2025’s Heads of State has already become a streaming hit. The Prime Video action-comedy movie, which has a 70% Rotten Tomatoes score with an 81% audience score, was directed by Nobody‘s Ilya Naishuller and stars John Cena as the American President opposite Idris Elba as the UK’s Prime Minister, who must overcome their rivalry when they find themselves stranded on enemy soil.

The cast of Heads of State also includes Citadel‘s Priyanka Chopra Jonas, The Boys‘ Jack Quaid,

House of the Dragon‘s Paddy Considine, District 9‘s Sharlto Copley, Barry‘s Stephen Root, and The Fall of the House of Usher‘s Carla Gugino.

Prime Video has now calculated their daily chart of the most-watched movies in the United States for July 3. After debuting on the platform on July 2, Heads of State debuted on the chart at No. 1. It has done so in spite of the chart being dominated by other successful recent тιтles including The Accountant 2 and Deep Cover.

The Movie’s Future Could Be Promising

Heads of State has managed to become a major streaming success despite facing major Fourth of July week compeтιтion both in theaters (Jurᴀssic World Rebirth also debuted on July 2) and on streaming (Netflix’s The Old Guard 2 and Paramount+’s Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado also premiered on the same day).

If the movie continues to maintain a place on the chart, a sequel to Heads of State could potentially be greenlit before long. This would mark the second streaming exclusive starring Cena to get a sequel in the 2020s after the 2021 Hulu movie Vacation Friends.
