While everyone is keen to know more about the DCU Justice League and who will be cast in the various roles, one of the most exciting castings has to be Wonder Woman. After Gal Gadot was confirmed to not be returning after the DCEU, fans have been desperate to find out what the future of the character looks like.
And surprisingly, Gunn may have just revealed how there could actually be more than one version of the character coming to the DCU. Specifically, James Gunn was discussing Nubia, and how that character may be a part of the Wonder Woman story in the near future of the DCU.
Gunn hints that fans of the character may be pleased to see her appear in the not-too-distant future of the DCU, which suggests she will have some sort of role in an upcoming project. But considering her comic book history, this could mean a lot of different things for Wonder Woman in the DCU.
Nubia Has Held The Wonder Woman Mantle In The Comics
Diana Prince Is Not The Only Wonder Woman In DC Comics
Nubia is an Amazonian who also appears in Wonder Woman comics. However, unlike other supporting characters, Nubia actually takes on the moniker of Wonder Woman in numerous comic book stories. This leads to compeтιтion between her and Diana Prince in the comics.
However, Nubia also holds a lot of responsibility as she is frequently shown to take on the role of becoming Queen of Themyscira after Hippolyta dies. In both capacities, Nubia is an impressive figure, and someone whose story is tied to Diana Prince in an exciting way.
Nubia actually takes on the moniker of Wonder Woman in numerous comic book stories.
And regardless of how they want to implement Nubia’s story into the DCU, it provides an opportunity to make this part of the DC Universe a lot more fleshed out and developed than it has been in previous adaptations.

The DCU Needs To Set Itself Apart From The DCEU With Projects Like Paradise Lost
Gunn is being very careful when it comes to approaching new stories in the DCU. While he appears to have several characters and teams he wants to bring in, he has firmly established a rule that no project can move forward until a strong script exists.
As a result, the Wonder Woman movie is still just in the writing stage, as confirmed by Gunn (via Game Rant). However, there is a project that is centered on Themyscira which appears to be further along in development, Paradise Lost.
Either in that prequel story, Paradise Lost, or the upcoming Wonder Woman movie, it could be interesting to have Nubia take on the role of Wonder Woman, which would help to distinguish the character from the DCEU version.
Since the most recent movie starring Gal Gadot came out in 2020, and the actress is still closely ᴀssociated with the character by many, it would be easier to separate the DCU version from the DCEU by focusing on another character who plays the same role.
The DCU Doesn’t Have To Make Nubia Wonder Woman To Make Her Story Work (But It Would Make Sense)
Nubia Would Make A Great Addition To The DCU No Matter What
But even if the DCU didn’t want to make Nubia the official Wonder Woman, there is plenty of comic book source material to draw from that features stories focused on this character and her relationship with Diana Prince and the other Amazons in Themyscira.
In her earliest iterations, Nubia was introduced as the long-lost fraternal twin sister of Diana Prince. Since then, the story has been altered and Nubia is now viewed as being a contemporary who grew up alongside Diana Prince. However, there is room to play with this relationship and build a new narrative around the two.
By exploring this connection, it could help to add more depth to Diana Prince, and show her as a more fully-realized character, rather than a miracle baby who trains in secret before eventually being allowed to step out into the world. Nubia could deliver a fresh new take on the story.
In addition, Nubia’s history as being the Queen of Themyscira in many Wonder Woman comics would be an interesting narrative to explore in the DCU outside of the traditional Wonder Woman story. This opens the door to see the fall of Hippolyta, and what causes Nubia to inherit the throne instead of Diana.
However, it would be a lot of fun to see Nubia take up the mantle of Wonder Woman, at least for a while. In addition to giving a clean slate to the character and breaking barriers to what the story has to include, it would just be great to see this version of Wonder Woman take the lead in a new chapter of DC storytelling.
