Somehow, through five Monsterverse movies, we still haven’t gotten a key Godzilla story that Godzilla X Kong: Supernova can finally address. The upcoming adventure starring Godzilla and Kong as the planet’s two Alpha тιтans has spawned plenty of Monsterverse-altering theories since its тιтle was released alongside a bit of teaser footage.
It’s far too early for any plot details to be revealed, but Supernova set pH๏τos and even the movie’s logo itself have the wheels turning for fans on potential antagonists or human character arcs. Regardless of what world-ending threat forces Godzilla and Kong to team up again, Godzilla X Kong: Supernova needs to pivot away from the previous two movies.
Godzilla vs. Kong properly introduced the Hollow Earth and dipped into Kong’s history, along with that of his species. Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire continued the focus on Kong, with a direct rival for the mᴀssive ape in Skar King threatening the surface world.
Godzilla X Kong: Supernova can, and should, take the Monsterverse in a new direction by telling a Godzilla-centric story. There is one specific element of the planet’s strongest defender’s character that has yet to be explored, and Supernova presents the perfect reason to finally get into it.
Godzilla X Kong: Supernova Needs To Dive Into Godzilla’s History
Kong Has Gotten Plenty Of Backstory, Now It’s Godzilla’s Turn
G-fans have clamored for more Godzilla for two movies now, as both of the previous entries in the Monsterverse relegated Godzilla to a side role while Kong acted as the stand-in for the audience. While that focus was appropriate to help flesh out the Hollow Earth and the scope of the Monsterverse itself, it’s time for Godzilla to shine again.
We know that Godzilla is an ancient and powerful creature, and one of the oldest тιтans, given that his species developed during the Permian period (250-300 million years ago). However, the movies have explored very little about what makes Godzilla tick, how he came to be, why he can absorb other тιтan DNA, and a plethora of other key aspects of his character.
The Hollow Earth has been introduced, the concepts of robotic and alien тιтans are already on the table, and we know enough about Kong to understand his motivations. It’s time we got a similar treatment for Godzilla, and Godzilla X Kong: Supernova can begin to answer some of the questions surrounding Big G.
What We Know About Godzilla In The Monsterverse So Far
The Planet’s Alpha тιтan And Chief Defender Is The Last Of His Kind
Godzilla’s history was most directly explored when his ancient home was introduced in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. We discovered that for centuries he nested in an ancient temple upon an unending supply of radiation from the Earth’s core, deep within the Hollow Earth.
However, most of what else we’ve learned has been in the context of his enemies. We know he had an ancient rivalry with Ghidorah, who came to Earth as a false king and was put down by Godzilla (and frozen by Shimo). We know that his species fought with the Great Apes, and that it was Godzilla himself who trapped Skar King and his minions.
The expanded canon of the Monsterverse, which includes graphic novels and movie novelizations, revealed that his species was wiped out by a combination of factors, including predation by the parasitic MUTOs, the ancient war with the Great Apes, and dropping levels of radiation on the Earth’s surface.
As the last of his kind and one of the strongest тιтans on Earth, Godzilla is important to maintaining the natural order of the planet. But we are still missing a ton of information about who and what Godzilla really is.
Godzilla’s History Is Important To The Monsterverse’s Future
Elements Of Godzilla’s Origin Could Shape What Comes Next
Information about Godzilla’s background and origins could wind up being essential to where the Monsterverse goes next. For example, we have no idea if Godzilla can spawn an offspring. His species was able to, and one of Toho’s ironclad rules for Godzilla is that he can never truly “die”, so it seems likely there is a Godzilla Junior out there somewhere.
While not one of Toho’s three firm rules, it’s recognized that Godzilla is supposed to be portrayed as a unique creature, and not part of a larger species. That likely explains why he is currently alone in the Monsterverse, despite canon pointing to a pre-existing population of тιтanus Gojira.
We don’t know if his ability to absorb other тιтans’ DNA is unique, or if that’s something another member of his species was ever capable of. We’ve seen Godzilla do it twice now with Mothra in Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Tiamat in Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, and both times it’s been essential to Godzilla achieving his most powerful forms.
Understanding more about Godzilla’s origins can truly set the stage for the future of the Monsterverse, whether that’s via offspring or Godzilla achieving yet another new form.
How Godzilla X Kong: Supernova Can Focus On Godzilla’s History
The Villain’s Origin Could Be Intertwined With Godzilla’s
Godzilla X Kong: Supernova is perfectly positioned to finally get around to addressing Godzilla’s true origin in the Monsterverse, and it all starts with the movie’s villain. By intertwining the villain’s origin with Godzilla’s, the movie can naturally develop Godzilla’s backstory in the course of introducing his opponent.
Godzilla X Kong: Supernova could very easily delve into Godzilla’s history while explaining how a villain like SpaceGodzilla came to exist, which would satisfy Godzilla fans who have longed to see Big G back in the spotlight.
On multiple occasions, Toho has introduced villains that originated (directly or otherwise) from Godzilla himself. Biollante was made from the genetic splicing of Godzilla cells with a plant, Orga was a botched attempt at cloning Godzilla for his durability, and Mechagodzilla’s many iterations have all been created specifically to stop Godzilla.
Perhaps the best example is the current most popularly theorized villain for Supernova: SpaceGodzilla. SpaceGodzilla was created when Godzilla cells fell into a black hole, which is why he is simply a bigger, stronger, crystal-powered version of Godzilla himself.
It would be remarkably easy to reinvent SpaceGodzilla’s origin to fit the Monsterverse, especially with black hole energy already present in the Hollow Earth. Godzilla X Kong: Supernova could very easily delve into Godzilla’s history while explaining how a villain like SpaceGodzilla came to exist, which would satisfy Godzilla fans who have longed to see Big G back in the spotlight.
