Exterritorial is among the most popular movies on Netflix, but director Christian Zübert reveals what would need to happen for a sequel. The action thriller was released back in April and portrays a special forces soldier who becomes suspicious of a U.S. consulate when her son goes missing. Exterritorial has generated impressive viewership, but polarized audiences since premiering, as evidenced by the 45% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes. The cast features Jeanne Goursaud, Dougray Scott, Annabelle Mandeng, Kayode Akinyemi, and Lera Abova.
During a recent interview with ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, Zübert addressed whether he would continue expanding the Exterritorial universe. While he would not dismiss making another movie, Zübert explained that it would require “a really good idea.” The writer/director added that success would not be enough reason to make a sequel. Read his comments below:
I always like to do something new and challenge myself in a new way. I wouldn’t say no, but I would say we would have to have a really good idea for that first. I wouldn’t just do it just for the heck of it, or just because the first one was successful.
What The Director’s Comments Mean For Exterritorial’s Future
Could Another Movie Work?
Exterritorial quickly became a streaming hit, boasting strong viewership numbers from the week of release, which has continued to improve in total. After premiering, it has also managed to chart on Netflix, generating more than 85 million views and counting, and ranking among the top five most popular non-English Netflix films, right behind Nowhere. Despite mixed reactions, this kind of performance signals that a sequel to Exterritorial could be another mᴀssive success.
The ending of Exterritorial seemingly wraps up the story for Sara Wulf (Jeanne Goursaud). The final moments reveal that Josh (Rickson Guy da Silva) was kidnapped, largely because Erik Kynch (Dougray Scott) knew Sara would actively pursue him. Making Sara appear unstable would also cast blame on her for any chaos that ensued, as Kynch targeted Kira (Lera Abova). Once Sara exposes him and reunites with Josh, she finally departs for America. While an Exterritorial sequel could possibly pick up from there, it could choose to explore an entirely separate story too.
Our Take On Another Exterritorial Movie
It Could Be Big For Netflix
Considering how successful Exterritorial has become, it will be interesting to see how much further it can improve on the Netflix charts, especially if Zübert eventually decides to develop a sequel. The movie is full of memorable and entertaining action, including some close-combat fight sequences and war flashbacks, which Zübert can still likely outdo in a follow-up. For Zübert, a sequel is not top of mind, but audiences who have watched Exterritorial are likely eager for more. Should it no longer center on Sara, a second movie could explore Kira’s character or depict another dangerous altercation and the effect of international law.
