Final Reckoning Fulfills A Tom Cruise Box Office Trend That All But 1 Mission: Impossible Movie Accomplished

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning has followed a Tom Cruise box office tradition, just like all but one other installment. Cruise is a global superstar and four-time Oscar nominee who first rose to prominence in the 1980s in movies including Risky Business and Top Gun, going on to a blockbuster career of movies that have collectively grossed $13.3 billion worldwide.

Some of the most notable Tom Cruise movies are the eight installments in the Mission: Impossible franchise, which is based on the 1966 series of the same name. He has portrayed superspy Ethan Hunt since the original movie debuted in 1996, reprising his role in every installment to date opposite an ensemble cast that includes Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg.

The fourth installment, 2011’s Ghost Protocol, set the trend that Cruise would perform actual death-defying stunts on camera, seeking to constantly one-up himself with sequences including climbing the Burj Khalifa, hanging off the side of a large airplane, and jumping off a cliff on a motorcycle. It also cemented the franchise’s status as a box office powerhouse.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning Is On Tom Cruise’s Top 10 Highest-Grossing Chart

It Has Made $548M Worldwide

Per The Numbers, 2025’s Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which is the most recent installment, has now reached a worldwide box office gross of $548.3 million as of the time of writing. That number comprises $185.9 million from domestic theaters and $362.3 million from international markets.

This total makes the new Mission: Impossible movie the fourth highest-grossing movie of the year so far, only falling behind the worldwide totals of live-action Lilo & Sтιтch remake ($919.4 million), the video game adaptation A Minecraft Movie ($954.4), and the Chinese smash hit Ne Zha 2 ($1.899 billion).

Ne Zha 2 is now the highest-grossing animated movie of all time.

The Final Reckoning‘s worldwide total also sees the movie climbing up the ranking of Tom Cruise’s overall filmography to become his eighth highest-grossing movie of all time. This number is particularly remarkable because the star has appeared in roughly four dozen theatrical releases over the course of his career.

Final Reckoning Is Now The Seventh Mission: Impossible Movie To Fulfill This Trend

As the chart reflects, the Mission: Impossible franchise also dominates three of the spots in Tom Cruise’s Top 5. However, while 2018’s Fallout was once No. 1, it has since been toppled by the 2022 legacy sequel Top Gun: Maverick, which is the star’s only movie to have ever grossed more than $1 billion worldwide.

The only installment to not currently have a place on the chart is 2006’s Mission: Impossible III, which is the 13th highest-grossing Tom Cruise movie overall with a worldwide total of $399.4 million. It stands below both 1988’s Rain Man ($412.8 million) and 2017’s The Mummy ($409.9 million).

Does That Mean Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning Is A Box Office Success?

Unfortunately, No

In spite of continuing this major franchise trend for Tom Cruise, the 2025 movie is still not positioned to be a box office success on its own terms. This is because the reported budget of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is $400 million.

That huge price tag makes The Final Reckoning one of the most expensive productions of all time. While its exact break-even point is unknown, many movies need to earn back two and a half times their budgets, which could mean that it needs to earn a whopping $1 billion just to turn a profit.

The reason movies generally need to make so much at the box office is that theaters keep half of ticket sales and publicity costs are not factored into production budgets.

At the time of writing, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is in the middle of its sixth weekend in theaters. In addition to experiencing a natural slowdown, it is about to face huge compeтιтion from PG-13 action-adventure movies such as Superman, Jurᴀssic World Rebirth, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps that could prevent it from climbing much higher.
