DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn shares an update on the DCU Batman‘s Batsuit in The Brave and the Bold. After eleven live-action Batman actors have portrayed the Caped Crusader on the big screen, expectations around the DCU’s new Batman are inevitably high. Every previous actor, director, and writer has left a mark on Batman’s movie legacy, and the DC Universe’s next Dark Knight needs to propose something new, if not groundbreaking.
In an interview with CBR, James Gunn answered whether Batman’s DCU Batsuit has been chosen. Gunn confirms that “there’s no decisions made about the costume at all yet” and reveals that he still doesn’t know which approach DC Studios and The Brave and the Bold will take with Batman’s costume. The DCU head recalls being in the same position for Superman’s costume “until the last minute,” as other decisions took higher priority. Read James Gunn’s full comments:
“You know, there’s no decisions made about the costume at all yet. I do [like the blue-and-gray Batsuit]! But I like the other versions, too. I like many different versions. I’m a Batman superfan. And so I like all the different versions of the Batman suit.
I don’t know what we are going to do. I didn’t know we were going to do the trunks [on Superman] until the last minute on this movie. Listen, I didn’t know the trunks were going to be that important until I took this job. Even Jim Lee came up to me, and the first thing he asked was, ‘What are you going to do about the trunks?’ And I’m like, ‘Really?!’ Like, we’re taking one of the most iconic characters in the history of the world, and all we’re talking about is the trunks!”

Batman’s DCU Batsuit Will Only Be Revealed Once The Movie Is Deep Into Production
While revealing the studio’s inspirations for the DCU Batman’s costume would spark excitement about The Brave and the Bold, DC Studios and director Andy Muschietti have a lot of work to do before they reach that decision. Even if James Gunn and Andy Muschietti planned to give Batman a specific suit, a lot could change during The Brave and the Bold‘s development. Therefore, Batman’s DCU Batsuit might only be revealed once the project is in the filming stage.
Superman’s trunks were the subject of intense discussion at some point in Superman‘s development. Ultimately, the trunks help drive home Superman‘s themes of classic superheroism, but James Gunn only reached that decision until late in the film’s production. Batman might wear similar trunks in The Brave and the Bold, but they aren’t strictly necessary. At this point, finishing The Brave and the Bold‘s script must be the top priority.

There Are Many Ways The DCU Can Adapt Batman’s Costume
Despite the large number of gritty and modern takes on Batman’s Batsuit in recent years, there’s still plenty of potential in the concept of a modernized Batsuit in The Brave and the Bold. Streamlined patterns, a wider color palette, new materials, and details like longer ears and white lenses are some elements that a grounded costume could adopt in order to stand apart all previous live-action Batsuits seen in movies like The Dark Knight and The Batman.
Andy Muschietti proved Batman’s more extravagant Batsuits can work in live-action in The Flash, where Michael Keaton’s Batman keeps several comic-accurate costumes stored in the Batcave.
That said, The Brave and the Bold offers the perfect opportunity to fully embrace a comic-accurate Batman that doesn’t hesitate to embrace its comic book roots. The DCU is already leaning into its source material with colorful and offbeat characters like Krypto, Guy Gardner, and Peacemaker. A blue-and-gray Batsuit, complete with external trunks, would suit the DC Universe’s love letter to the comics.
