Since Jurᴀssic World Rebirth is releasing in theaters very soon, now is the perfect time to watch (or rewatch) the other movies in the franchise. However, many fans are wondering if they need to watch the other Jurᴀssic Park movies if they have never seen them. After all, it may be hard for some to commit to watching six other films before the release of Rebirth on July 2, 2025.
While Steven Spielberg’s original Jurᴀssic Park movie is generally regarded as one of the best blockbusters of all time, the two most recent films in the franchise have underwhelmed audiences and critics. Therefore, after the release of 2022’s Jurᴀssic World Dominion, Rebirth is set to start a new era for the series.
In doing so, it will hopefully recapture the magic of the original Jurᴀssic Park. Ahead of its release, early reactions for Jurᴀssic World Rebirth have praised the movie’s dinosaurs and Spielberg vibes, so it seems like it will be a great time at the theaters. However, let’s discuss whether it is necessary to watch all the other Jurᴀssic Park/World movies before Rebirth.
How Jurᴀssic World Rebirth Fits Into The Jurᴀssic Park Franchise Timeline
Rebirth Takes Place After Jurᴀssic World Dominion
Since Jurᴀssic World Rebirth is following a brand-new cast of characters, it doesn’t seem like it will be too closely connected to any previous films in the franchise. However, even though it is clearly trying to be a separate story, it is still set in the same world as the other films and is not a complete reboot, which is important to keep in mind.
Jurᴀssic World Rebirth actually takes place five years after Dominion, which established that most dinosaurs roam the Earth freely. Throughout the last three Jurᴀssic World movies, a lot of dinosaurs finally escaped captivity and started living all over the world alongside humans. This was an exciting idea, but was never really explored properly in Dominion.
Now, it seems like the idea of dinosaurs coexisting with humans will once again not be explored that much in Rebirth. In the newest Jurᴀssic World movie, it will apparently be established that dinosaurs couldn’t survive long term in a lot of ecosystems on Earth. Therefore, after a few years of roaming the planet freely, most dinosaurs have now returned to tropical islands.
Because of this, dinosaurs seemingly don’t pose a major threat to most humans around the time that Jurᴀssic World Rebirth takes place. Presumably, dinosaurs are remaining in tropical environments, and the rest of the world is practically back to normal. Therefore, instead of being set in a city, like some scenes in Dominion, Jurᴀssic World Rebirth will take place on a remote island.
The Original Jurᴀssic Park Will Help You Understand Why The Franchise Is Beloved
Jurᴀssic World Rebirth Is A Love Letter To Jurᴀssic Park
More specifically, Jurᴀssic World Rebirth will be set on an island called Isla Muerta, which served as the testing facility for the original Jurᴀssic Park. Spielberg’s original movie was set on Isla Nublar, which was known as Site A, whereas the second and third films were set on Isla Sorna, also called Site B. Therefore, many years after the original trilogy, audiences will finally learn more about Site C.
Since Jurᴀssic World Rebirth’s Isla Muerta is close to the original two islands, there will likely be some connections to the franchise’s first three movies. By setting Rebirth on this island, it will hopefully honor the franchise’s past. More specifically, the new movie is hoping to recapture what made Spielberg’s original movie so special.

To achieve this goal, David Koepp, the writer of the original film, was actually brought back to pen the screenplay for Jurᴀssic World Rebirth. Interestingly, Rebirth will actually include a thrilling sequence involving a T-rex chasing characters down a river that was cut from the original Jurᴀssic Park. Therefore, because of Koepp’s involvement, Jurᴀssic World Rebirth will probably contain a lot of references and callbacks.
Because of this, it may be a good idea to watch the first Jurᴀssic Park movie before Rebirth. This is definitely not required, but it may help you understand the nostalgia of the original movie and why the franchise has thrived for so long. Plus, the first Jurᴀssic Park movie is simply incredible and should be watched by all movie fans.
Jurᴀssic World Trilogy Is Recommended To Understand Rebirth’s Current Setting
However, Rebirth Is Not Closely Tied To The Trilogy
Since Rebirth seems like it will be a nostalgia-based movie, it will likely be less connected to the previous three Jurᴀssic World films. However, it may still be helpful to watch the other Jurᴀssic World movies to understand why dinosaurs are roaming the planet freely and are no longer contained to a specific theme park.
The first Jurᴀssic World movie introduced hybrid dinosaurs, which will be further explored in Rebirth.
The first Jurᴀssic World movie, which is the second highest-rated film in the franchise, was actually once again set on Isla Nublar and revealed that a successful theme park had been reopened on the island. However, obviously, throughout the course of the Jurᴀssic World trilogy, the dinosaurs escaped this island and started living freely in the world. Understanding the context of how this happened could be helpful while watching Jurᴀssic World Rebirth.
Additionally, the first Jurᴀssic World movie introduced hybrid dinosaurs, which will be further explored in Rebirth. Since Jurᴀssic World Rebirth will include hybrid dinosaurs, most prominently the D-rex, the previous three films could be worth a watch. However, the story of the new film isn’t related to any of the events in the previous Jurᴀssic World trilogy, so it is definitely not required.
No Prior Jurᴀssic Park Or Jurᴀssic World Knowledge Is Needed For Rebirth
Rebirth Could Be Your First Jurᴀssic Park Movie Ever, & You Will Be Okay
Overall, while seeing the previous movies in the franchise could enhance your experience watching Jurᴀssic World Rebirth, it is not required. Since no characters are returning and Jurᴀssic World Rebirth is telling a brand-new story, you can go in completely blind and still have a great time.
Rather than being too closely connected to the previous films in the franchise, the trailers for Jurᴀssic World Rebirth tease that it will be a fun, somewhat standalone adventure movie which features a lot of terrifying dinosaurs and thrilling action sequences. If you have never followed the franchise before, the upcoming film could be the perfect time to join in on the fun. Therefore, if you do not want to, you don’t need to watch any of the previous films before the release of Jurᴀssic World Rebirth.
