I’m Convinced A Major 28 Days Later Mystery Will Never Be Answered

The 28 Days Later franchise teased a cure in the second movie in the series, 28 Weeks Later, but with the new release, 28 Years Later, it is clear that the cure never came to fruition. The franchise, which started in 2002, tells the story of the outbreak of a Rage Virus that turns anyone infected into homicidal killers almost instantly. Considered part of the zombie genre, the infected are mostly still living beings who are incredibly fast, strong, and tenacious, and they won’t stop until they kill anyone they find who is not infected.

The sequel, 28 Weeks Later, came out in 2007 and promised hope for the future. The infected had been mostly contained in London, but there were still innocent people within the perimeter fighting for their lives. This included a father whose kids were out of the country when the infection occurred. However, he got his children back to the country after his rescue, a decision that caused the Rage Virus to spread, thanks to the fact that his son proved to be asymptomatic. This teased that the 28 Days Later franchise might find a cure. It never happened.

28 Weeks Later’s Teased Cure Probably Won’t Be Addressed At This Point

After 28 Years, No Cure Has Been Found

28 Weeks Later introduced two kids, Tammy and Andy Harris, who were out of the country when the infection began. This means they had no contact with it and were allowed entry to reunite with their father. However, they caused serious problems when they snuck out of the safe zone to retrieve things from their family home. While there, they found their mother was still alive and was not infected. The problem is that when they brought her back, it turned out she was asymptomatic and was still a carrier of the Rage Virus.

She caused a second outbreak when she infected her husband, and he began infecting others in the safe zone. Eventually, the infected father found his kids and infected Andy. Like his mother, he never showed signs of being infected, which meant he was also asymptomatic. However, this also means that he is a carrier of the Rage Virus, and as his mother showed, this could cause problems for anyone he infects. The people in charge sent him to France, where they could study him and possibly find a cure.

When 28 Years Later came out, it was said the Rage Virus had been eradicated in continental Europe, but there are still infected people, and some even mutated with a higher intelligence. However, there has been no cure.

When 28 Weeks Later ended, Andy and his sister were flown to France in the hope of finding a cure. In 28 Years Later, there is no known cure. This could mean several things, but the most obvious is that nothing anyone did to Andy brought about anything resembling a cure. The ending of the second movie also showed what it looked like were Rage Virus-infected people racing through the streets of Paris, with the Eiffel Tower in the background. However, that seems to have been retconned in 20 Years Later.

It is almost ᴀssured that the Rage Virus spread to France after the events of 28 Weeks Later. England was able to stop the virus, and thanks to the sharing of information between countries, the rest of Europe beat it down as well. The infected people still exist in certain areas, but the main cities in continental Europe are not only safe, but also thriving, albeit with precautions keeping the Rage Virus out of their communities. However, this leaves one plot hole. What happened to Andy and Tammy after 28 Weeks Later?

Sadly, the idea that the infection hit France, at least for a short time, hints that their fates were grim. Remember, in 28 Weeks Later, the second that Don kissed his asymptomatic wife, he was instantly infected and killed her before going on his rampage. It probably didn’t take much for Andy to accidentally infect someone, which likely led to his death, as well as his sisters, eliminating the chance to find a cure for the 28 Days Later infection.
