One of DC Studios’ co-CEOs elaborates on why the DC Universe has to find its own Batman for The Brave and The Bold rather than using Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight. James Gunn has confirmed the DCU’s Batman will be played by a different actor rather than The Batman‘s star, keeping Pattinson’s Dark Knight in his own separate world instead.
As Pattinson’s The Batman universe has found a huge following, many are still questioning why the DCU doesn’t just merge with Matt Reeves’ franchise by letting this version of Bruce Wayne join the other heroes that DC Studios are exploring in the reboot. However, one of the executives at DC Studios is now opening up more about why the two franchises will remain separate.
During a new interview with Omelete (translation via Comic Book Movie,) DC Studios co-CEO expanded upon the DCU’s decision to find their own Batman, rather than using Pattinson’s current iteration. As they are still waiting for The Batman 2 script from Reeves, Safran shared the following about the DCU’s Batman:
Peter Safran: I think we’ve been very clear about Batman. We love Matt Reeves, and we’re dying to do Batman: Part II. Like I said, we’re always going to do some projects that are primarily auteur-driven. Those are projects that we call Elseworlds… Obviously, we need a Batman in the DCU, and so we’re developing ours as well, even though Matt’s movie is under our tent and part of DC. We’ll do Batman: Part II, hopefully, when Matt is really ready for it, when he turns in the script. And then we’ll also do our Batman and Robin story, The Brave and the Bold.
What Peter Safran’s Batman Comments Mean For The DCU
With DC Studios developing new DCU movies for Batman and Wonder Woman, it’s clear that DC Studios wants to have as much of a clean slate as possible when it comes to their major characters. Someone like John Cena’s Peacemaker, who is coming over to the DCU from the DCEU, is a lot easier to integrate than Pattinson’s Batman for The Brave and The Bold.
Safran’s comments also reaffirm that Reeves’ The Batman universe has a significantly different tone from what the DCU is looking to explore, meaning that bridging the two worlds into one would have downsides for Pattinson’s Caped Crusader. The Batman franchise was always intended to stand as an Elseworlds property, and DC Studios is committed to keeping it that way.
Since the DCU’s Batman is already established in this world, it’s wiser for DC Studios to find its own actor for their Dark Knight. That leaves the door open for popular candidates like Jensen Ackles to get cast as the DCU’s Batman, who could easily play this world’s Bruce, as The Brave and The Bold will explore the hero as a father.
Our Take On Peter Safran’s Batman Comments
Safran’s explanation about how they want to approach the DCU’s Batman is also encouraging in terms of underlining that DC Studios is open to having multiple live-action versions of the hero. Fans also get the best of both worlds, as they get to see a younger Batman through Pattinson, while the DCU can explore an older iteration, leaving room for many unique stories to be explored.
With the DCU casting new actors for Batman and Wonder Woman, as well as future Justice League heroes, DC Studios can put the DCEU behind them and bring the world the proper DC reboot that these characters need. As The Brave and The Bold is still being written, it will definitely be interesting to see who they do tap for the DCU’s Bruce.
Time will tell if this also means that DC Studios will have other versions of major players like Batman co-exist at the same time, as they expand their Elseworlds banner. Hopefully, more updates on The Brave and The Bold, as well as The Batman 2, will emerge sooner rather than later, as fans wait to learn what is next for the Dark Knight in these two universes.
