KPop Demon Hunters: 7 Ways The Hit Netflix Film Sets Up A Sequel

The following contains spoilers for KPop Demon Hunters, now streaming on NetflixKPop Demon Hunters has a good self-contained story, but the film does set up some intriguing plot threads that could be explored in a sequel. KPop Demon Hunters works very well as a stand-alone story, quickly establishing a world of pop star demon hunters before fleshing it out with compelling characters, great action, and a killer soundtrack. The ending of KPop Demon Hunters gives Rumi, Mira, and Zoey a happy ending, uniting them as friends and bandmates while resolving the danger posed by the Saja Boys.

However, the film doesn’t necessarily solve every problem forever. There are certain family histories, mythical lore, and supernatural forces teased throughout the film that could easily be expanded into a sequel. There are also plenty of potential returning villains who could bedevil Huntr/X once again (or even turn into unlikely allies). While the movie stands on its own perfectly well, here are some plots that could drive a KPop Demon Hunters sequel.

KPop Demon Hunters Could Bring Back Gwi-Ma

Gwi-Ma Could Continue To Be The KPop Demon Hunters’ Big Bad

KPop Demon Hunters Intro 4

Established as the king of the demons, Gwi-Ma could easily return for a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters and enact a new plan to destroy the Honmoon. While Jinu and the Saja Boys are the active antagonists of the film, Gwi-Ma is the overarching big bad of the movie. Even if he’s defeated by the film’s end, he could return.

A sequel to KPop Demon Hunters could see the villainous force of nature attempting to adapt to his failures in this film, seeking to use music against the hunters in a similar way to the Saja Boys. He could also eschew that approach and just send legions to kill the hunters.

Gwi-Ma was also taken aback by the discovery that Rumi was half-demon and yet free of his influence, suggesting there are other demonic forces at play. Gwi-Ma could return in a sequel, confronting those other forces or even allying himself with them, in hopes of breaking the Honmoon. Gwi-Ma seems too powerful to be simply defeated, so his return would make sense.

KPop Demon Hunters 2 Could Delve Into Rumi’s Parents

The Mystery Of Rumi’s Origins Deserves Focus

One of the big twists in KPop Demon Hunters is the discovery that Rumi is half-demon. Although her mother had been a hunter before her, little is revealed about her personal history or personality. There’s also no revelations about the idenтιтy of her father or his eventual fate.

While Rumi has made peace with her demonic side, it still presents an intriguing mystery that could be expanded upon in future stories. A flashback to the romance between Rumi’s mother and the demon would be illuminating, as well as a chance to see the previous Hunters pop band in action (both musically and as demon hunters).

While Rumi’s mother has been said to be ᴅᴇᴀᴅ, there’s a chance her father didn’t share that fate. He could easily return in a sequel, either as a villain working with Gwi-Ma or as a redeemed demon similar to what Jinu was going through. Especially in light of Jinu’s fate, introducing Rumi’s father would make for a compelling arc.

KPop Demon Hunters Sequels Could Explore Different Musical Eras

KPop Demon Hunters Spin-Offs Could Visit Historical Periods, Similar To Prey

KPop Demon Hunters Intro 3

One of the most interesting aspects of the lore behind KPop Demon Hunters was the revelation that the group has existed for centuries. Powered by music, the power of the hunters has been reincarnated multiple times throughout history. A sequel to KPop Demon Hunters could use this as an opportunity to jump across time to different periods to focus on different bands.

Even a plot focused on Huntr/X could be a great chance to reveal more about the other Hunters from across history, like the Sunlight Sisters.

A sequel to KPop Demon Hunters could introduce more about the various girl groups that are teased in the film’s opening montage, revealing their fates and potential connections to the other Hunters. They could even serve as the focus for an entire spin-off, showcasing a different style of music set within the same world.

Even a plot focused on Huntr/X could be a great chance to reveal more about the other Hunters from across history, like the Sunlight Sisters, potentially delving into any mysteries they left behind in their wake. This could also be a good way to give Celine more to do in a sequel, building off her complicated feelings about Rumi.

KPop Demon Hunters Could Bring Back Two Saja Boys

Romance And Baby Could Return As Villains Or Even Potentially As Wildcards

KPop Demon Hunters uses the Saja Boys as the primary threat, but notably doesn’t kill all of them in the film’s climactic battle. While Jinu sacrifices himself to save Rumi, Mira and Zoey dispatch Abs and Mystery, respectively. However, this leaves Baby and Romance as potential survivors of the fight, as their deaths aren’t shown on-screen.

If those two did survive the events of the climax, Baby and Romance could easily return for a sequel. This may even explain why Romance, who is one of the less prominent members of the demonic boy band, is voiced by a bigger talent like Joel Kim Booster — potentially setting up a bigger role in a follow-up film.

If Baby and Romance do return, it would be potentially after the creation of a new Honmoon, which could keep them out of the demon realm. Baby and Romance could return as servants of Gwi-Ma, or they could take the opportunity to try and claim their freedom. Baby and Romance’s survival in the climax feels like too much of a lingering thread to simply be ignored.

KPop Demon Hunters 2 Could Dive Into Zoey And Mira’s Backstories

Mira And Zoey Deserve To Take More Of The Spotlight In A Prospective Sequel

While KPop Demon Hunters is very much focused on Rumi and her arc, the film also does tease the backstories for Zoey and Mira. The music video for “Golden” suggests both have a lot of family issues, which could easily be plot fodder for a prospective sequel that shifts focus away from Rumi.

Zoey was established as a daughter of two worlds, torn between her South Korean heritage and her home in Burbank, California. Mira is also firmly shown to be a “problem child” who rebelled against an upтιԍнт family, including parents and a brother (who is conspicuously absent from part of the “Golden” music video) who didn’t seem to understand her.

Diving into their backstories and families could be a great way to expand the universe, while also giving the other two main characters a greater spotlight in the story. It could also give Rumi a natural chance to observe other family units, potentially playing into a storyline involving her, Celine, and her parents.

KPop Demon Hunters Sequels Could Explore More About The Origins Of The Honmoon

The Honmoon’s Potential Weaknesses Could Set Up A Sequel With More Action

KPop Demon Hunters Intro 2

The Honmoon is one of the most important aspects of KPop Demon Hunters, serving as the mystical barrier that prevents the hordes of demons serving under Gwi-Ma from spreading out more easily around the world to consume human souls. While the Honmoon is established as an ancient technique, the film doesn’t reveal where it exactly comes from.

A sequel to KPop Demon Hunters could explore more about the lore and properties of the Honmoon, especially given the ending of the film sees the trio craft a new version of the barrier that nevertheless doesn’t reach the golden impenetrable status that they wanted. A sequel could dive into other ways to achieve that upgrade.

The Honmoon potentially having a weakness could be a big plot point in a possible sequel, allowing forces like Gwi-Ma or even the remaining Saja Boys to (even just briefly) bring it down. This could be an easy way to give the new film a larger scope conflict with the demon hordes, setting up a more action-heavy plot.

KPop Demon Hunters 2 Could Introduce More Mythological Elements

KPop Demon Hunters Should Explore More Of Its World In A Sequel

KPop Demon Hunters This Is What It Sounds Like

KPop Demon Hunters does a great job fusing the real-life mythology of South Korea with K-Pop aesthetics and “magical girl” tropes. There are plenty of other monsters, demons, and even deities that could come into play as a result, with more mystical elements being a potentially great addition to a potential sequel.

These forces could give Huntr/X new breeds of demons to combat or introduce further shades of gray into their initially black-and-white worldview. The potential sequel could also continue to explore morality through Rumi, potentially showing a holy figure whose inner darkness contrasts with the demonic Jinu’s softer side.

The apparent global reach of Huntr/X as a band could even justify taking them around the world, pitting the trio against the mythological figures or demonic forces of other cultures. This could be a great way to showcase different kinds of visual designs, ensuring any sequel to KPop Demon Hunters feels unique from the original.
