Controversial Oscar Nominee, 53, Returns In Upcoming Western Movie’s First Look Images

Karla Sofía Gascón appears in images for the new movie Trinidad. Gascón is best known for her starring role in the film Emilia Pérez, a French-Mexican musical drama that came out last year. The movie earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, though she ultimately lost out to Anora‘s Mikey Madison.

Now, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed new images for Gascón’s upcoming role in Trinidad. The first image shows Gascón wearing all black, including a dress and hat, as two characters in cowboy hats stand behind her. In the second image, she wears the same outfit while sitting at a table for a feast. The third image focuses on another of Trinidad‘s female characters.

In addition to showing the images, the report also explained the filming information for Trinidad. The movie is set primarily in the United States, but was filmed in recent months in the Canary Islands. Trinidad has a $12 million budget, but distribution plans have not yet been announced. What This Means For Karla Sofía Gascón

She Has Been Steeped In Controversy This Year

A brief synopsis of Trinidad has also been revealed. The movie focuses on the тιтular protagonist, played by Gabriela Andrada, who escapes persecution in 19th-century Spain and arrives in the Wild West in the United States. She develops weapon skills on her journey and also encounters enemies such as Gascón’s Bronson.

According to Gascón, Bronson is a widow and an “ultra conservative womanwho is akin to “a kind of female Darth Vader with five children to protect and manipulate.” The actor elaborates below:

“She hates immigration, even though she’s an immigrant herself, with deeply patriarchal values. She’s anti-feminist and opposed to social progress, although she has always been a fighter and has earned the respect, even as a woman, of the people who operate on a foundation of deception. A kind of female Darth Vader.”

Notably, it’s Gascón’s first movie since Emilia Perez and the controversy that ensued after. Though her role as the тιтular character was initially celebrated, she was wrapped in a controversy following her Oscar nomination after old tweets from her resurfaced that contained dialogue construed as racist. She limited her appearances at award ceremonies afterwards but did attend the Academy Awards.

Those behind the film, including Gascón herself, have already spoken up to address the actor’s controversy. ISII group founder Silvia Carvalho da Costa, who is helping back the project, called her villain role “almost poetic” and noted that her personality “outweighed any past controversy.” De Costa’s full quote is below:

That her next role would be that of a villain seemed almost poetic to me, so it was a personal choice: her bilingual presence, the intensity she brings, and that ambiguous energy the character needs did the rest.

We’ve all been heroes in someone’s story and villains in someone else’s.

I know Karla: in addition to being a great actress, she is, for me, a great person, and that outweighed any past controversy.

Gascón added that she “can’t control the interpretations others make of [her].” She expressed wanting to forge ahead with her career despite the controversy. Check out Gascón’s full quote below:

I can’t control the interpretations others make of me or the things they say, often taken out of context, manipulated, or simply false. What I can do—and will continue to do—is demonstrate, through my work and my daily atтιтude, that I am not the person some have tried to project.

Our Take On The Trinidad Images

Gascón Is Getting A Second Chance

Trinidad will give Gascón a chance to take on a very different type of role than what she did in Emilia Pérez. There is no word on the update and there is currently no trailer at this time.

On the other hand, the upcoming Western is a reset for Gascón following the controversy. Given the serious nature of her tweets and responses, it seemed unclear what this would mean for the actor’s future after Emilia Perez. Gascón has seemingly been given a second chance with Trinidad, however, and has a producer who really supports her career.
