I’m Convinced The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ New Trailer Just Explained Exactly Why Galactus Hasn’t Appeared In The MCU Until Now

The Fantastic Four: First Steps‘ new trailer offers a possible explanation for why the movie’s main villain had not appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe before his upcoming debut. Fox tried to bring Galactus to live-action before in one of its Fantastic Four movies. However, despite having made concept art of the character’s classic humanoid form, it did not work.

Instead, Galactus was displayed as a cloud in 2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. That decision did not sit well with fans, becoming the biggest criticism surrounding the Marvel movie. Thankfully, the MCU is going for a more comic book-accurate route with Galactus’ inclusion in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, with Ralph Ineson’s character now in humanoid form.

While Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom is not expected to appear in the upcoming MCU movie, Ineson’s Galactus and Julia Garner’s Silver Surfer offer plenty of excitement to make up for it. There are many questions about the characters’ roles in the film and the larger MCU, which includes their origin and why they are only appearing now.

Galactus Has Been Absent From The MCU For Almost Two Decades

The Powerful Being Would Have Shifted The MCU’s Cosmic Corner

The MCU started with one of the best entries in the Marvel franchise, Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, in 2008. The Fantastic Four: First Steps arrives in theaters this year, which means Marvel’s First Family joins the MCU 17 years after the franchise started. In that time, Galactus and the Silver Surfer never appeared once in the MCU.

With almost two decades of absence, it means that The Fantastic Four: First Steps‘ characters have missed several important MCU events. Galactus could have made for an interesting character when it came to Thanos wanting to balance the universe or as commentary on Eternals‘ Emergence plot and how the Celestials essentially planned on planets being destroyed. However, he did not appear.

However, as it stands, the characters’ MCU absence needs to be explained. With the larger cosmic role he plays, so must Galactus’, and I think it has.

Yes, we know that Marvel didn’t have the Fantastic Four’s movie rights back then. If the studio did, I’m sure we would have seen the team running around the MCU from the start. However, as it stands, the characters’ MCU absence needs to be explained. With the larger cosmic role he plays, so must Galactus’, and I think it has.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ Newest Trailer Teases An In-Universe Explanation For His 2025 Debut

Every New Bit Of Footage From The MCU Movie Looks “Fantastic”

Marvel has just released a new The Fantastic Four: First Steps trailer. The footage delves deeper into the Galactus side of things, with Garner’s Silver Surfer announcing that she is Galactus’ herald and that he is coming to Earth. Adding to it, we see Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards and the rest of the Fantastic Four meet him in space.

When they meet Galactus, it seems like the cosmic being is dormant, not yet ready to move on Earth. That gives the Fantastic Four time to run away scared back to their planet to prepare for his arrival. The Silver Surfer also says, “I herald his beginning,” which I believe implies the antagonist is still waking up from his sleep.

The MCU Adapting Galactus’ Incubation Story Could Explain Why The Main Universe Hasn’t Seen The Villain As Well

Galactus' body in the MCU Fantastic Four movie's trailer

If Galactus had been dormant for some time, it would explain why he had not appeared in the MCU before The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The MCU theory connects to his Marvel Comics story, as Galactus spent centuries in an incubation chamber to power up before becoming the world-devouring threat we know him as.

I feel like the ship the Fantastic Four encounters Galactus in the new MCU trailer, and how his armor still seems to be ᴀssembling makes it look like Marvel is adapting the incubation chamber. While the Fantastic Four will come from a different Earth, there could be a version of Galactus in each universe, with the MCU’s still dormant, too.

That said, Galactus is a cosmic being that could be unique, able to traverse all universes. If the incubation chamber theory plays out in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, then it would be explained why he also never appeared in the main MCU universe. However, as we know, he wakes up in the film, so now he can.
