One Of Jane Austen’s Most Popular Novels Is Getting Another Movie Adaptation With First Casting Revealed

One of Jane Austen‘s most popular novels is getting another movie adaptation, with the first casting revealed. Many of the author’s most popular works have been adapted for the screen several times. Pride and Prejudice, for instance, has been adapted into the 1995 BBC series starring Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth and the 2005 film starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen.

Pride and Prejudice is also being adapted into an upcoming Netflix series starring Emma Corin, Jack Lowden, and Olivia Colman. Jane Austen’s novel Emma has also been adapted multiple times, including the 1996 version starring Gwyneth Paltrow and the 2020 version starring Anya Taylor-Joy. Now, another one of her novels will be receiving a second film adaptation.

Focus Features and Working тιтle Films have announced that a new Sense and Sensibility movie is in the works, with Daisy Edgar-Jones starring as Elinor Dashwood. Georgia Oakley will direct from a script written by Diana Reid. On Instagram, Daisy Edgar-Jones shared a pH๏τo of her reading a Penguin Classics edition of Sense and Sensibility to celebrate the announcement. See her post below:

What This Means For The New Sense & Sensibility Movie

What To Know About The New Adaptation

The first novel published by Jane Austen in 1811, Sense and Sensibility tells the story of the three Dashwood sisters and their widowed mother as they leave their family estate in SusSєx and settle in a humble cottage in Devon. There, the two eldest daughters encounter love and heartbreak that put their differing personalities to the test.

The novel marked Austen’s emergence as a powerful literary voice and continues to be a foundational work in English literature. Sense and Sensibility has already been adapted to the screen several times, most notably the 1995 film, which was directed by Ang Lee, written by, and starring Emma Thompson as Elinor Dashwood alongside Hugh Grant, Kate Winslet, Alan Rickman, and more.

The new adaptation will star Daisy Edgar-Jones, a rapidly rising star known for her leading roles in the blockbuster Twisters, Where the Crawdads Sing, and On Swift Horses. Georgia Oakley is known for her debut feature Blue Jean, while Diana Reid is the acclaimed author of several bestselling novels, including Love & Virtue, Seeing Other People, and Signs of Damage.

Our Take On The New Sense & Sensibility Movie

How Can It Set Itself Apart?

Since the 1995 film is held in extremely high regard, the new Sense and Sensibility movie will be tasked with the challenge of setting itself apart. To do so, the new adaptation could lean into more modern storytelling sensibilities, highlighting issues such as gender, class, and emotional repression through a sharper contemporary lens.

If successful, the new Sense and Sensibility movie could reframe Austen’s wit and social commentary for a new generation, capturing the timeless tension between pᴀssion and propriety in a fresh, potentially resonant way.
