After MobLand Season 2 Confirmation, Pierce Brosnan & Helen Mirren’s Exciting Netflix Movie Releases In 2 Months

Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan are two of the most iconic actors of their generation. Dame Mirren turns 80 this year, but still has a career as active as ever. Her recent works include playing the narrator in Barbie as well as returning to her role as Cara Dutton in 1923 season 2, a show set in the Yellowstone universe.

Brosnan has already had an active year in 2025. He played a key role in the acclaimed Steven Soderbergh spy drama Black Bag and had a voice in the surprise hit animated feature The King of Kings.

The two acting legends were also in another recent project together. They played a married couple on the TV series MobLand, which is a crime series focused on two families vying for power and to take apart each other’s empires. The show was well-received, and MobLand has since been renewed for season 2.

While the series also focused on Tom Hardy as one of its lead performers, MobLand really gave Mirren and Brosnan a chance to show off. Now, the pair are coming back together for a brand-new film.

Pierce Brosnan & Helen Mirren Are Reuniting In The Thursday Murder Club

The Murder Mystery Movie Releases On August 28 On Netflix

Mirren and Brosnan are both starring in The Thursday Murder Club. Based on the Richard Osman novel of the same name, the movie will follow the story of a group of friends in a retirement community whose cold-case solving club has real-life applications when someone is found ᴅᴇᴀᴅ, leading them on a whodunnit.

In addition to Brosnan and Mirren, the cast also includes Ben Kingsley, Celia Imrie, Naomi Ackie, Daniel Mays, and Henry Lloyd-Hughes. It is directed by Chris Columbus and features a script adapted by Katy Brand and Suzanne Heathcote.

The Thursday Murder Club will be a great chance for Brosnan and Mirren to reunite. The MobLand season 1 finale did not air until June 1, so the Netflix movie, which will be released on August 28, will be a good chance for audiences to get a taste of the two actors working together again while they wait for season 2. Mirren and Brosnan are also joined by other acting legends like Kingsley, making The Thursday Murder Club even more exciting.

Pierce Brosnan & Helen Mirren Have A Different Dynamic In The Thursday Murder Club

They Are Part Of The Friend Group Rather Than A Couple

Ben Kingsley as Ibrahim Arif, Helen Mirren as Elizabeth Best, and Pierce Brosnan as Ron Ritchie in The Thursday Murder Club.

Though they will reunite on screen together, Mirren and Brosnan will not have the same dynamic in The Thursday Murder Club as they did in MobLand. In the crime series, the pair played a couple.

In the book adaptation film, however, they will be two members of a friend group. This platonic connection will create a different tone between the two characters, who do not carry with them the complications of being in a romantic relationship. It is fairly rare that adult man-woman friendships are portrayed as fully platonic, so this will be an interesting opportunity for the actors.

The characters’ relationship status is not the only thing that distinguishes them from the MobLand characters. Whereas Conrad and Maeve are more twisted in the Paramount crime drama, Mirren’s Elizabeth and Brosnan’s Ron seem to keep things a lot more lighthearted in The Thursday Murder Club.

The fact that Mirren and Brosnan have some positive hype going into this movie, particularly given some of it comes from Osman, is a great sign for the film.

Both projects dabble in the crime genre, but the upcoming Netflix movie appears to do so with a far lighter approach. This will make Mirren and Brosnan extremely entertaining in The Thursday Murder Club and act as a positive change of pace.

What Are The Reactions To Pierce Brosnan & Helen Mirren’s Casting In The Thursday Murder Club?

Many Have Praised The Casting Choices As Perfect

The initial reactions to The Thursday Murder Club trailer and casting have been largely positive. While some die-hard book readers have suggested alternate casting options, many have expressed that they are the perfect casting choices.

One of the cast’s champions was original Thursday Murder Club author Osman. In an interview with Good Housekeeping last year, Osman noted that visiting the set left him “in awe at these actors. The author did not provide more specific reviews of the performances, but Mirren and Brosnan are key parts of this praised cast.

This approval will be very beneficial going into The Thursday Murder Club. The murder mystery genre seems to be making a comeback, as evidenced by movies like Knives Out. As such, this latest Netflix work will be responsible for continuing to carry the genre forward and also standing out from its compeтιтors.

The characters are also already beloved by those who have read The Thursday Murder Club books, which sets up particular expectations. The fact that Mirren and Brosnan have some positive hype going into this movie, particularly given that some of it comes from Osman, is a great sign for the film.

The Thursday Murder Club Is An Exciting Reunion For Pierce Brosnan & Helen Mirren

They Clearly Have Great Chemistry In Any Project

The Thursday Murder Club will be an exciting reunion for Brosnan and Mirren. Even when their relationship had its points of tension in MobLand, one could not take their eyes off these two.

They have impressive backgrounds but yet still have the ability to morph into any role they are given. This undeniable chemistry is an ᴀsset to any project they work on, and it is a quality that already seems palpable in The Thursday Murder Club.

Even before MobLand, Mirren and Brosnan were also in a film together over four decades ago. This was in John Mackenzie’s dark comedy crime drama The Long Good Friday. Mirren played the lead role, showing off her talent early on, whereas Brosnan played a supporting part.

Still, the film marked the pair’s first film together, showing how deeply rooted their connection is. This long history likely makes their on-screen chemistry even better, which will serve The Thursday Murder Club well.

It is also worth noting that after years of not having films or shows together, they have two in relatively rapid succession. After all, The Thursday Murder Club is set for release less than three months after the conclusion of MobLand season 1.

The release proximity will help provide Mirren and Brosnan’s shared projects a sense of momentum. If The Thursday Murder Club goes well, this could be the cue for more collaborations to be created.
