Mel Gibson’s Monster Film With 84% RT Audience Score Gets Streaming Release

Mel Gibson has had one of the most complicated careers of any actor over the last few decades. On the one hand, he has been a standout both in front of and behind the screen, getting accolades for his directing and acting roles. His two Academy Awards are for Braveheart, for which he won Best Director and Best Picture for his producing roles. At the same time, Gibson’s personal life has been fraught with controversy, as he has been accused of homophobia, anti-Semitism, and racism, and has faced various legal issues.

Despite all these rocky points, Gibson has still managed to have an active career into the 2020s. His 2025 thriller Flight Risk brought in a respectable $48.7 million at the box office, but did not get positive reviews. He is also working on his Pᴀssion of Christ sequel, which is expected to start filming soon. Now, one of Gibson’s better-received works from recent years has gotten a streaming release date.

Monster Summer Is Coming To Streaming

The Movie Has A Strong Audience Score

Monster Summer has officially been given a streaming release date. Directed by David Henrie (of Wizards of Waverly Place fame), the movie is a fantasy adventure film about a young friends group who team up with a retired police officer to protect their island from a mysterious force that is threatening them. Gibson plays the ex-cop, Gene Carruthers, opposite young performer Mason Thames, who had his breakout role with The Black Phone. Monster Summer had mixed reviews from critics, but was well-liked among audiences, scoring at 84% Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes.

Mason Thames also stars in How to Train Your Dragon, which is currently in theaters.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, Monster Summer has now received a streaming release date. It will come to Paramount+ with Showtime on July 1. The movie is currently available to rent on digital platforms, but had not previously been available to watch on any streaming platform.

What This Means For Monster Summer

It Could Have A Comeback

Despite audiences giving favorable reactions to the film, Monster Summer did not do well at the box office upon its theatrical release last October. The movie is reported to have made just $103,102 during its theatrical run. As such, this streaming release is a great chance for Monster Summer to gain a streaming following and have a viewership renaissance that matches the kind of support it got from audience reviews. This would help cement a success for Gibson.
