I’m Convinced Avengers: Secret Wars Will Be Divided Into Two Movies After A New MCU Update

I believe that a new Marvel Cinematic Universe update opens the door for Avengers: Secret Wars to be divided into two movies. One of my biggest issues with the Multiverse Saga so far is the absence of a movie for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Sure, Thunderbolts* was revealed to be an Avengers movie in disguise, and I loved it. However, it was not a formal entry in the team’s franchise, which will only come next year, with Avengers: Doomsday‘s story kicking the Multiverse Saga into high gear.

A lot will be going on in the film, which unites multiple MCU teams — some for the first time — and even brings in Fox’s X-Men in addition to Robert Downey Jr.’s debut as Doctor Doom. There is simply just a lot of story to tell in the MCU’s upcoming movies, and I have started to wonder if Avengers: Secret Wars can end the Multiverse Saga in 2027 in a satisfying way as is. Now, a new MCU update makes me think Marvel could have a card up its sleeve.

Marvel Studios Is On A Mandate To Release Fewer Projects

The Focus Will Be On A Specific Kind Of Project Going Forward

With the creation of Disney+, the MCU started to release way too many projects per year, with those being movies, TV shows, animated entries, Special Presentations, and more. It just became too much for a lot of fans, and I believe that the need to do MCU homework to understand the Multiverse Saga’s overall storyline or be up-to-date with the franchise led to many dropping the MCU. That can be seen in how movies like The Marvels and Thunderbolts* have underperformed at the box office.

Many of the MCU’s best movies came in the Infinity Saga, which released far fewer projects than in the past few years in the franchise. Marvel understood that it needed to change after the recent wave of criticism the studio faced, with an MCU slowdown confirmed by Disney CEO Bob Iger. According to the executive, the chase for subscribers for Disney+ led to some studios losing focus, saying, “The first step that we’ve taken is that we’ve reduced volume, we reduced output, particularly in Marvel.” Now, the MCU will focus its movie efforts on sequels and franchises.

Marvel Has Surprisingly Added A New 2028 Movie

The MCU Is Going Back To 4 Movies Per Year

Based on how Bob Iger revealed the new mandate of fewer releases for the MCU in February 2024, I was surprised by Disney’s latest move when it comes to Marvel. Unexpectedly, a new MCU movie has been added to 2028. The “Unтιтled Marvel” film will be released on December 15, 2028. What makes this project’s announcement curious is the fact that it means 2028 will see the release of four MCU movies, as Marvel also has the following 2028 dates scheduled for MCU films: February 18, May 5, and November 10.

It does not make sense to me that barely a year after an MCU slowdown was confirmed, the studio would suddenly increase the franchise’s film output from 3 movies per year at most to four. Due to that, I believe the move might have been a last-minute decision related to one of Marvel’s upcoming Avengers films. Interestingly, the unтιтled 2028 Marvel movie has received an Avengers-level release date, as Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars will be released on December 18, 2026, and December 17, 2027, respectively.

Why Dividing Avengers: Secret Wars Into Two Movies Would Make Sense

The MCU’s Multiverse Saga Has Major Events On The Way

I’m convinced the new 2028 MCU movie is the follow-up to Avengers: Secret Wars, which could be divided into parts 1 and 2. With both upcoming Avengers movies having been delayed from May to December in their respective release years to give Marvel plenty of time to get them ready, the studio could have seen the need to adapt such a huge story into three projects instead of two, and the new 2028 Marvel movie getting a similar December release slot would continue Marvel’s plan for the Avengers movies.

Avengers: Secret Wars, if it is anything like the comics, will take place in Doctor Doom’s Battleworld. By dividing Avengers: Secret Wars‘ story into two movies, the MCU would give Battleworld plenty of time to be explored, with several MCU and multiverse characters interacting and other possible Marvel projects in between them. I think that Battleworld is a rich location that could help the MCU’s Multiverse Saga end with a bang, and expanding the story to make sure the concept is used to the best of its ability would be perfect for Avengers: Secret Wars and its possible second part.
