Henry Cavill’s Newest Highlander Reboot Casting Sets A Major 12-Year DC Reunion

The Highlander reboot is one of Henry Cavill’s biggest upcoming projects, and the film’s recent casting announcement just confirmed that a major DC reunion will be happening. Henry Cavill’s most notable role by far is his starring role in Man of Steel, with his reprising his role as Superman throughout the DCEU. Although he appeared in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League, and a few others, a proper Man of Steel sequel never happened thanks to the cinematic universe’s production troubles. However, Highlander is finally bringing some of these DCEU actors back together.

1986’s Highlander is one of the most beloved fantasy movies of the 1980s, with it spawning a mᴀssive franchise that consists of multiple sequels, spinoffs, books, comics, and more. Although the franchise has been dormant for a while, Highlander is finally coming back thanks to an upcoming reboot. The reboot will star Henry Cavill as Connor MacLeod, the immortal Scottish Highlander who lives in New York, and it will be directed by John Wick franchise director Chad Stahelski. Although the reboot has been in development for a while, more actors are finally getting announced.

Russell Crowe Joins The Highlander Reboot

Crowe Will Play Henry Cavill’s Mentor

Russell Crowe has officially joined the upcoming Highlander reboot, with him starring alongside Henry Cavill. Crowe will be playing Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez, an Egyptian immortal who becomes the mentor of MacLeod after learning about the conflict. Ramírez was played by Sean Connery in the original Highlander, meaning that Crowe has some big shoes to fill in the reboot. The legendary Gladiator performer is the second actor who has joined the film, setting high expectations for the rest of the Highlander reboot cast.

Russell Crowe & Henry Cavill Reunite After 12 Years

Their Last Movie Together Was Man Of Steel

Russell Crowe’s Highlander role is incredibly exciting, as it means that he will finally reunite with Henry Cavill after 12 years. Crowe previously played Jor-El, the father of Superman, in 2013’s Man of Steel. Although his death occurs before Henry Cavill’s Superman appears, Jor-El plays a major role in the film, with most of the movie’s first act focusing on the Kryptonian icon.

Although Russell Crowe doesn’t properly appear in any of the other DCEU movies, he does have a small role in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Jor-El has a voice cameo in the director’s cut, meaning that Crowe’s impact on the overall film is incredibly small. So, Highlander will be the first time that the actors have had a significant role in the same film since Man of Steel, meaning that fans of the original DCEU should be excited to see the Highlander reboot when it hits theaters.

This Highlander Reunion Makes Up For No Man Of Steel 2

Their Dynamic May Not Be Far Off Due To The Mentorship Relationship

Although Man of Steel 2 tragically never happened, the existence of the Highlander reboot makes up for it in some sense thanks to Cavill and Crowe’s involvement. While we never got to see Russell Crowe’s Jor-El appear in a proper Superman film after Man of Steel, seeing the actors work together in Highlander means that they are finally back together in a blockbuster action movie. While it isn’t exactly the same as Man of Steel 2, it is probably the closest that we will ever get, as a sequel to Zack Snyder’s Superman movie probably won’t happen thanks to 2025’s Superman reboot.

Interestingly, the actors’ respective roles in Highlander offer a similar dynamic to their roles in Man of Steel. Crowe’s Ramírez is a mentor to Cavill’s MacLeod, paralleling how Jor-El is a mentor to Superman. Although the duo will undoubtedly share the screen far more in the Highlander reboot, the foundation of what made their Man of Steel roles great is still there. It will be a while until the Highlander reboot comes out, but Man of Steel fans should be eagerly awaiting it.
