After Sinners, I’m More Excited For Ryan Coogler To Leave His $2.1 Billion Franchise Behind

Despite the fact that franchises, sequels, and remakes still continue to dominate Hollywood, Ryan Coogler’s original vampire thriller Sinners managed to become one of the biggest movies of the year, already dominating talk about awards and making much more money than anyone could have initially predicted. Sinners‘ reviews are already some of the best of the year, and the fact that it has done so well is an extremely exciting sign for the future of Coogler’s career, even as he continues to make some of the biggest movies of all time.

Initially, Sinners‘ cast was its biggest draw, bringing in the always-excellent Michael B. Jordan to play dual roles as twin brothers alongside a solid supporting cast, with a mix of some more well-known actors, like Hailee Steinfeld and Delroy Lindo, alongside newcomers like Miles Caton. However, it soon became apparent that Sinners‘ storytelling, themes, and writing were the main reasons for seeing it, all courtesy of Coogler. Before this, he was a very well-liked filmmaker, but now, he is absolutely a name to keep a close eye on.

Sinners Makes Me Interested To See More Original Movies From Ryan Coogler

The Movie Is An Excellent Example Of His Skillset

Coogler has had a very solid career so far, but interestingly, Sinners is his first wholly original movie, as the rest of his films have been large-scale franchise projects, with one smaller biographical drama. Coogler is probably most well-known for the Black Panther movies, both of which he directed and co-wrote, and, despite the fact that both of those films were great, Sinners was on another level entirely. It goes to show that Coogler is potentially at his best when he is able to create something completely on his own.

While Coogler hasn’t made a bad film yet, Sinners is clearly already one of the defining pieces of his career, and the fact that it was wholly original is a good sign that these stories are where he shines the most. While he likely wasn’t put under too much studio pressure for Creed or the Black Panther movies, there will always be certain beats to hit or characters to include in franchise fare, which might not always perfectly align with what the director would ideally want. Sinners proved just how incredible Coogler can be, and makes his future original movies even more exciting.

Ryan Coogler Will Be Free To Make More Original Movies After Black Panther 3

His Time With Huge Franchises May Be Coming To An End

Black Panther 3 has been confirmed to be in development at Marvel Studios with Ryan Coogler and his production company, Proximity Media, once again at the helm. This is in addition to the animated series Eyes of Wakanda. Very little has been officially revealed about Black Panther 3, and Coogler is undoubtedly going to write and direct once again. Once that movie is finished, though, it is very likely that he will be done with his time at Marvel, and will be able to get back to more original projects with unique stories and characters.

Sinners Proves How Influential Ryan Coogler Can Still Be Even Without Franchises

He Managed To Make A Huge Hit Out Of Nowhere

Coogler has been pretty well-known for years now, mostly thanks to the first Black Panther, but, even though Sinners wasn’t quite as big from a box office perspective, it is still one of the most talked-about movies of the year. He’s done with the Creed movies, and will soon be done with Black Panther, making his future endeavors largely a mystery. However, it is precisely because it is a mystery that it is so exciting.

On a budget of $90-100 million, Sinners has made around $362 million worldwide.

Coogler has also said that he doesn’t have much interest in a Sinners sequel, likely as he wants to continue telling unique stories that can stand on their own. His work has dominated early awards talk, and the fact that this incredible piece of art was his very first completely original world and story shows just how talented of a filmmaker and storyteller he is. Sinners is hopefully just the first of this kind of movie from Coogler, and the start of an exciting new phase of his career.
