Avengers: Doomsday & Secret Wars Can Still Make Scarlet Witch An MCU Hero Again Despite Her Doctor Strange 2 Death

Even though the Scarlet Witch is ᴅᴇᴀᴅ, the MCU has the perfect opportunity to make her a hero again in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Most characters in the MCU have gone through their fair share of rough times, but the character with some of the most tragic storylines is arguably Wanda Maximoff. After losing her parents young and becoming a weapon for HYDRA, she lost her brother Pietro just as the twins were saved by the Avengers. She managed to rebuild her life only to end up losing Vision and her sons.

Scarlet Witch’s MCU story culminated in her death in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. It was a divisive moment for a lot of MCU fans as her death was unexpected and underwhelming. Not only did her arc in Doctor Strange 2 undo all of the good progress she made with the Avengers, but it ruined her in-universe reputation as well. She experienced so much grief only to die alone as a villain, and that was not the fate that fans wanted for her. However, the MCU can make her a hero again in an upcoming project.

We could tell that Wanda’s grief had something to do with triggering the events of WandaVision, but it was genuinely surprising to find out that she was the one controlling the Westview Anomaly. Although her grief wasn’t her fault and she was unknowingly creating the Hex, it’s understandable why the residents of Westview saw her as a villain. Accidental or not, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness painted her as a more blatant villain, making her the main antagonist of the film.

Wanda was aware of what she was doing in Doctor Strange 2 which is why she worked as an outright villain. Although she knew her journey across the multiverse was destructive, her grief didn’t allow her to stop. The end of the film was the character’s redemption as she sacrificed her life to ensure the destruction of the Darkhold, but it ultimately didn’t feel impactful, since her death prevented her from getting another proper hero story in the MCU. She died a regretful villain when there were so many other redemption routes that the MCU could’ve gone with.

Wanda Came Face-To-Face With A Scarlet Witch Variant

Something that the MCU has already been teasing throughout the Multiverse Saga is the concept of variants, setting up Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars to be some of the franchise’s biggest events yet. We’ve already seen variants of major characters like Captain America and Mister Fantastic, so it wouldn’t be far off for the MCU to include a Scarlet Witch variant at some point. In fact, a Wanda variant was already shown in Multiverse of Madness, and having her return could be the way that the MCU brings the character back into the main timeline.

Although not much has been revealed about Avengers: Doomsday’s story just yet, it’s safe to ᴀssume that heroes from other universes will be teaming up with the main Avengers to take down Doctor Doom. Having the Doctor Strange 2 Scarlet Witch variant return would fit right into the plot without the studio having to jump through hoops. Even if it’s not the exact version of Wanda that we’ve grown familiar with, it would be the best way to bring the character back in some capacity without having to retcon her last MCU appearance.

Scarlet Witch actress Elizabeth Olsen has stated on several occasions that her time in the MCU is done, or at least on a break. Of course, MCU actors are incredibly secretive about their roles, and it could just be her way of throwing fans off, but even if she’s telling the truth, Scarlet Witch could still appear without Olsen. Wanda’s powers are so strong that she’s able to cover great areas with them, and it means she doesn’t have to be onscreen for them to be in use.

The Westview Anomaly in WandaVision covered a whole town, and the dreamwalking ability exhibited in Doctor Strange 2 gave her the ability to take over a different body. Having her powers appear in a scene while suggesting that she’s off fighting elsewhere could ostensibly work given the extent of Wanda’s powers, and it’d mean that Olsen wouldn’t have to necessarily reprise her role. Wanda’s death remains one of the strangest recent MCU decisions, and Marvel should take any chance that they can get to redeem Scarlet Witch as a hero in Avengers: Doomsday.
