Does 28 Years Later Have A Post-Credits Scene?

28 Years Later is a continuation and a new beginning for the zombie franchise, giving it a major role to play in teasing what comes next. Coming 28 years after the last installment, 28 Weeks Later, the third entry in the franchise was made with the long-term vision for the world in mind. Sony greenlit the new film from director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland as part of a potential new 28 Years Later trilogy. This movie is the start of that vision becoming realized. That brings certain expectations about what the movie will do to set up sequels.

With 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple already announced and dated for January 2026, the likelihood that Boyle’s film would directly tease the next one was strong. How it would do this was up for debate. In addition to different reveals and pieces of world-building, a post-credits sequence is a proven way for Hollywood franchises to tell audiences what’s coming next. The popularity of these tags may lead those watching 28 Years Later to expect that the 2025 zombie film would include one too, especially with the franchise’s future confirmed.

28 Years Later Does Not Have A Post-Credits Scene

Continuing A Franchise Trend

It is confirmed that 28 Years Later does not include a post-credits scene of any kind. There’s no additional footage included in the mid-credits or after the credits. Danny Boyle and Alex Garland instead let 28 Years Later‘s ending remain the last thing that audiences see from this story.

28 Years Later currently holds a 93% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.

While this means audiences can stop watching the movie once the credits start rolling without fear of missing a tease for the next movie, it is still encouraged to sit through the credits to see the names of everyone who worked so hard on this film. The fact that 28 Years Later bypᴀssed a post-credits scene perhaps should not be too surprising. Neither 28 Days Later nor 28 Weeks Later included credits scenes.

Both previous films in the franchise let their endings be the end, even though each also concluded in a fashion where the story could continue on. 28 Years Later keeps the franchise tradition alive in that sense. There isn’t a post-credits scene attached here, but the movie also still accomplishes the point of them without one.

28 Years Later’s Ending Is Basically Its Post-Credits Scene

The Bone Temple’s Story Is Teased

Note: There are NO SPOILERS for 28 Years Later belowInstead of including an after-credits scene, 28 Years Later lets its ending serve the same function. It should not be considered a spoiler to know that this film ends in a way where audiences will have some idea of what will come next. 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple‘s story is directly set up before the credits begin to roll. It’s easy to imagine a cut of the movie where some of this comes after the credits. For various reasons, 28 Years Later lets its perfect post-credits scene opportunity act as the movie’s true end.

By putting the sequence at the very end of 28 Years Later, it eliminates the chance a viewer could see the movie but miss out on the franchise set up.

By putting the sequence at the very end of 28 Years Later, it eliminates the chance a viewer could see the movie but miss out on the franchise set up. There inevitably would have been people who saw the movie and didn’t stick around through the credits. Those individuals would have then been out of the loop regarding what’s coming in the sequel. 28 Years Later ensures that all viewers will be on the same page, as long as they actually watch the entire film.

This is arguably a better outcome for audiences than 28 Years Later including a post-credits scene. There may still be some questioning about if a true tag will come even after the ending, but it is not necessary in this case. 28 Years Later gives viewers a complete story and a tease for the future all before the credits even begin. In this instance, a post-credits scene was unnecessary.
