The Naked Gun trailer reveals Liam Neeson getting silly and meeting Pamela Anderson’s femme fatale. After the late Leslie Nielsen starred as police detective Frank Drebin in the original Naked Gun trilogy from the 1980s to the 1990s, Liam Neeson is taking over the lead role in the upcoming Naked Gun reboot, playing his son, Lt. Frank Drebin Jr. The cast also includes Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser as Capt. Ed Hocken Jr., CCH Pounder, Kevin Durand, Cody Rhodes, Liza Koshy, Eddy Yu, and Danny Huston.
Now, Paramount Pictures has released the official trailer for The Naked Gun. It begins as if it’s a trailer for one of Liam Neeson’s action thrillers, such as Taken, before shifting to the style of slapstick comedy that Naked Gun is known for. After showcasing several more gags, the trailer reveals the reboot’s basic premise, as Pamela Anderson’s character, Beth, comes to Frank for help solving her brother’s suspected murder. What The Naked Gun Trailer Means For The Movie
Everything Revealed By The Trailer
After the Naked Gun teaser trailer consisted almost entirely of the scene in which Frank stops a bank robbery dressed as a schoolgirl, the full-length trailer reveals several more gags and the reboot’s basic premise. Pamela Anderson’s character Beth, who embodies all the classic traits of a femme fatale, comes to Frank for help solving her brother’s suspected murder. The stakes are high, since Police Squad will be shut down if they don’t solve the case, and even worse, turned into a Spirit Halloween.
With the stakes this high, Frank will have to do something his father was never able to – solve a case by the book. Of course, he can’t, as one of the main gags from the trailers is Frank dressing up as a schoolgirl to stop a bank robbery, taking out the thieves with a sharpened lollipop. The Naked Gun pokes fun at Neeson’s reputation as an action hero in Taken in several ways, as the synopsis reads, “Only one man has the particular set of skills… to lead Police Squad and save the world!“
Our Take On The Naked Gun Trailer
It Does A Great Job Combining Old & New
The Naked Gun trailer does a great job recreating the type of slapstick comedy that Leslie Nielsen’s original trilogy is known for, while also attempting to bring the reboot into the 21st century. There’s the inventive use of dashcam and bodycam footage to capture Frank facing a sudden bout of diarrhea, recklessly firing his gun near bystanders to skip ahead in the bathroom queue. Just like his father before him, Frank Jr. is a destructive driver, including tearing a charging station out of the wall.
If the full movie can maintain this mix of reverence and ridiculousness, The Naked Gun might just pull off the rare comedy reboot that actually works.
Pamela Anderson delivers some solid jokes straight from the Zucker, Abrahams, and Zucker playbook – like the moment when Frank tells her to “take a chair,” and she responds by loudly dragging one out of his office. If the full movie can maintain this mix of reverence and ridiculousness, The Naked Gun might just pull off the rare comedy reboot that actually works.
The Naked Gun releases on August 1.
