James Gunn Gives Positive Updates On DC Batman And Wonder Woman Movies

James Gunn shares new exciting updates about what is going on with The Brave and The Bold movie, as well as Wonder Woman’s DC Universe reboot film. As the DCU’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” has several films and TV shows in the works, a new Wonder Woman movie is being written, while DC Studios has actively been working on getting Batman’s next cinematic portrayal closer to becoming a reality in Gunn’s franchise through The Brave and The Bold. Though release dates have yet to be set, fans will have a lot to look forward to with the two DC icons in the DCU.

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn was asked about the status of Wonder Woman and Batman in the DCU franchise. Gunn went into detail about where they are with the plans for both the Batman and Wonder Woman films in the DCU, as he shared the following about how important the two DC legends are for the franchise:

Rolling Stone: In the broadest sense, what needs to be figured out to make those two properties work — Batman in this universe?

James Gunn: Batman has to have a reason for existing, right? So Batman can’t just be “Oh, we’re making a Batman movie because Batman’s the biggest character in all of Warner Bros.,” which he is. But because there’s a need for him in the DCU and a need that he’s not exactly the same as Matt’s Batman. But yet he’s not a campy Batman. I’m not interested in that. I’m not interested in a funny, campy Batman, really. So we’re dealing with that. I think I have a way in, by the way. I think I really know what it’s — I just am dealing with the writer to make sure that we can make it a reality.

Rolling Stone: And how about for Wonder Woman?

James Gunn: Similar. Wonder Woman I think is actually easier for me, because there haven’t been so many infinite portrayals of Wonder Woman — definitely not in movies, but really anywhere — that there have been of Batman. Every single Batman story has been told. It seems like half the comics that have come out of DC over the past 30 years have Batman in them. He’s the most famous superhero in the world and the most popular superhero in the world. And people love him because he’s interesting, but also having so much of him out there can also make him boring. So how do you create that property that’s fun to watch?

What James Gunn’s Comments Mean For The DCU’s Batman & Wonder Woman

As Robert Pattinson’s Batman will remain in his own universe and separate from this reboot, it’s understandable why Gunn is finding it challenging to land on a distinct depiction of Bruce Wayne in the DCU timeline. Given that there have been a huge number of live-action Batman films in the past, The Brave and The Bold has to find as many ways as possible to show what this iteration of the DC legend will bring to the table that doesn’t feel too similar to what fans have already seen. That also becomes clear through Gunn’s following quote, as he also stated:

No, I don’t — Batman’s my biggest issue in all of DC right now, personally. And it’s not — I’m not writing Batman, but I am working with the writer of Batman and trying to get it right, because he’s incredibly important to DC, as is Wonder Woman. So outside of the stuff that I’m doing in the projects that are actively going, our two priorities are finishing our Wonder Woman and our Batman scripts.

In the case of Diana, there’s perhaps more freedom when it comes to working out how to pull off a new Wonder Woman for the DCU, given that there has only been one cinematic version of the character in modern times.

As such, the DCU doesn’t have as big of an obstacle with reimagining Wonder Woman for the big screen as it does with Batman. Given how the DCEU’s Wonder Woman films were all set in the past, the DCU can instead tackle her film in the present, which is already a huge difference in itself.

Our Take On James Gunn’s Batman & Wonder Woman Comments

Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman, DC's

As Gunn has made it very clear how integral Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman will be for the DCU, it will be exciting to see what comes out of Bruce and Diana’s solo films, especially once the scripts are done for both projects. Looking at the way the DCU is currently being set up, it seems there will be a lot to look forward to with the new takes on the DC Trinity. Hopefully, more updates on Wonder Woman and The Brave and The Bold will emerge before 2025 is over.
