A DC Universe movie gets properly declared ᴅᴇᴀᴅ by DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn. As DC Studios is getting the DCU franchise up and rolling, with Superman coming out in less than a month, there are still several movies and TV series being worked on for Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters.” However, while several DCU projects have been filmed or are filming at the moment, some have not gone past the development stages, and it appears one of them is not going forward at all.
During a new interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn confirmed that one of the DC Studios movies they had been developing was recently killed. While he wouldn’t reveal which specific тιтle it was, Gunn shared the following about the DC movie:
Yeah. We just killed a project. Everybody wanted to make the movie. It was greenlit, ready to go. The screenplay wasn’t ready. And I couldn’t do a movie where the screenplay’s not good. And we’ve been really lucky so far, because Supergirl’s script was so f—–g good off the bat. And then Lanterns came in, and the script was so f—–g good. Clayface, same thing. So f—–g good. So we have these scripts that we’ve been really lucky with or wise in our choices or whatever the combination is.
What James Gunn’s Comments Mean For The DC Universe
While Gunn may not have stated the exact film, it’s likely the project he was referring to was the Sgt. Rock movie that was recently announced to no longer be moving forward. But with Gunn’s commentary on how other films like Supergirl, Clayface, and TV shows like Lanterns, had impressive scripts, it also highlights how DC Studios is remaining committed to not pursuing a project until the script is in a good place. If it was Sgt. Rock that Gunn was referencing, it’s a major sign that DC Studios is not repeating the mistakes of the DC Films division.
Given how Gunn also recently addressed a Teen тιтans movie rumor, it doesn’t seem like the team-up film is the one that they had to cancel, especially as the group has brand recognition and is also easier to figure out than a character like Sgt. Rock. Unless Gunn was alluding to The Authority or James Mangold’s Swamp Thing, which were part of the initial Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” announcement in January 2023, time will tell which film it is that is not happening. However, if the screenplay for the canceled movie somehow comes together in the future, perhaps Gunn will give it a chance to be resurrected.
Our Take On James Gunn’s DC Universe Comments
While it is disappointing to hear that at least one film at DC Studios is not going forward, there are still so many more projects to be excited about, including the fact that there are new Batman and Wonder Woman movies being developed for the DCU. The best thing for DC Studios is to commit to movies and shows that they have a solidified vision for, rather than force themselves to produce something that they don’t have full confidence in. But as Superman rolls out this summer, it will be interesting to see how the DCU goes forward in the coming years.
