Some unsolved movie mysteries can be extremely frustrating, but this isn’t always the case. In fact, there are several examples where leaving things a little ambiguous can be more satisfying than any definitive answer ever would have been. Cobb uses a spinning top throughout Inception as a totem to figure out if he’s asleep or awake. In the iconic final sH๏τ of Inception, he spins the top one last time, and it begins to wobble ever so slightly before Nolan cuts to black. In the end, whether he’s dreaming or not isn’t as important as the fact that he’s no longer fixated on the outcome. There are also some compelling fan theories which suggest that his wedding ring is his real totem.

Gene Hackman stars as a surveillance expert who stumbles onto a criminal conspiracy, but he ultimately finds himself under the microscope as someone else bugs his apartment.

The ending of The Conversation lingers long after the credits roll, drawing the audience into the protagonist’s paranoid frame of mind. He tears his entire apartment to pieces, but still fails to locate the recording device being used against him. This suggests he may be imagining his circumstances, as a result of his creeping guilt from his surveillance work.

The only potential solution to the murder of Mildred’s daughter leads to a ᴅᴇᴀᴅ end, but Three Billboards still delivers a satisfying ending. Mildred’s quest for justice is tied to her own guilt and her inconsolable grief. The idenтιтy of the killer seems secondary to these concerns.

In Jordan Peele’s Nope, Jupe is deeply traumatized by an incident from his childhood, but he only ever speaks about the ᴅᴇᴀᴅly chimpanzee attack using several layers of separation. He seems keen to tell the story, although he does so by referencing a Saturday Night Live sketch about his own trauma. When Peele eventually shows the reality of the attack, it doesn’t seem so funny.

Amid the chaos of Gordy’s violent rampage, the image of a shoe balanced finely on its heel seems wildly out of place. Given the subject of Nope, it’s easy to think that there may be some alien explanation for this event, but it’s just as likely that it’s a freak accident without any real meaning.

Anatomy of a Fall‘s ending sees Sandra returning home from court after being found not guilty. However, this verdict doesn’t explain the circumstances of Samuel’s death at all. There are still three compelling possibilities with their own merits and flaws: Sandra murdered Samuel, he killed himself, or he fell by accident.

It seems as though Daniel understands that his testimony will decide his mother’s fate. Perhaps he chooses to save her so that he doesn’t lose both his parents, although this still doesn’t explain his father’s death. Sandra’s grief could be mixed with guilt, but her desire to care for her son means that she would never confess if she was responsible for her husband’s death.

Fans have often put forward their own theories about what Charlie’s “great idea” to get the gold safely might be. These range from letting air out of the tires to opening the back doors and letting the gold slide down to the bottom of the mountain. While these hypothetical scenarios can be fun to think about, they aren’t as satisfying as The Italian Job‘s iconic cliffhanger ending.
