Disney’s Latest Remake Is Quietly Climbing Toward a Billion-Dollar Surprise

Lilo & Sтιтch crosses another box office milestone as earnings are close to hitting $1 billion. Based on the 2002 Disney animated film of the same name, the 2025 live-action remake has seen huge success at the box office. It debuted as the no.1 film worldwide and set a domestic record for the largest four-day Memorial Day weekend opening, grossing more than $182 million. Since then, the movie has crossed several major box office milestones.

According to The Numbers, the 2025 Disney remake has grossed over $860 million worldwide, with only $140 million from crossing the $1 billion milestone. With $368 million from domestic ticket sales and $492 million from international sales, it has secured a place in the top 100 highest-grossing movies of all time worldwide and became the 39th highest-grossing movie for Walt Disney.

What The Milestone Means For Lilo & Sтιтch

Lilo & Sтιтch Is Not Far From Making $1 Billion

The highly-rated Lilo & Sтιтch remake crossed the $800 million milestone during its fourth weekend in theaters. In less than a week, the movie has already made another $60 million worldwide. At this rate, Lilo & Sтιтch is very likely to cross the $1 billion mark in the coming weeks. The production cost for the movie was only around $100 million, with the remake already hitting profitable margins during its debut week. Even adding the marketing costs on top, the movie has already tripled the budget.

Lilo & Sтιтch turned out to be a very lucrative movie for Disney. It’s also worth pointing out that the movie, which was released on June 23, is approaching its first full month in theaters. On average, a movie stays in theaters from four to 12 weeks, especially as streaming has shortened the theatrical window for movies. With more profitable movies tending to stay in theaters longer, it’s more than probable that the Disney remake will end its theatrical run with more than $1 billion, which means it might end up on the list of the top 50 highest-grossing movies of all time.

Our Take On Lilo & Sтιтch Box Office

Lilo & Sтιтch’s Future Is Brighter Than Ever

Lilo & Sтιтch has been one of the most successful Disney live-action remakes in recent years, and its box office record is a huge win for the company after Snow White‘s review bombs and box office disappointment. However, the movie’s success is very rare, which certainly doesn’t guarantee future live-action remakes will be received well. Disney may have a hard time finding another project to compete with its record, having already put some movies on hold, including Tangled.

On the other hand, Disney heads have already teased potential sequels ahead of Lilo & Sтιтch‘s release. Closing in on the $1 billion mark means a bigger chance for the movie to receive a follow-up and even spinoffs. So far, the franchise’s future is wide open.
