Kathryn Bigelow’s First Movie In 8 Years Gets Awards-Friendly Release Date In Theaters & On Netflix

Kathryn Bigelow‘s first movie in eight years gets an awards-friendly release date in theaters and on Netflix. After making her directorial debut with the biker movie The Loveless in 1981, Bigelow made a name for herself helming several thrillers, such as Near Dark (1987), Blue Steel (1990), Point Break (1991), Strange Days (1995), and K-19: The Widowmaker (2002). She gained critical acclaim for The Hurt Locker in 2008 and Zero Dark Thirty in 2012, but it’s been eight years since her last movie, Detroit, was released in 2017.

Now, Kathryn Bigelow’s first film in eight years has received a release date. Announced by Netflix on X, formerly Twitter, A House of Dynamite is coming to select theaters this October before heading to the streaming service on October 24. Check out the post below, accompanied by a poster for the film:

What A House of Dynamite’s Release Date Means For The Movie

It Has Awards Season Hopes

Directed by Kathryn Bigelow, with a script written by Noah Oppenheim (Jackie, Zero Day), A House of Dynamite follows a team of White House officials rushing to respond to an imminent missile strike targeting the United States. The film features a mᴀssive star-studded ensemble cast that includes Idris Elba, Rebecca Ferguson, Gabriel Bᴀsso, Jared Harris, Greta Lee, Tracy Letts, Moses Ingram, Anthony Ramos, Brian Tee, Jonah Hauer-King, Jason Clarke, Gbenga Akinnagbe, Abubakr Ali, Willa Fitzgerald, Renée Elise Goldsberry, and Kaitlyn Dever.

A House of Dynamite has received an awards-friendly release date, which isn’t surprising given the caliber of filmmaker that Kathryn Bigelow is. For The Hurt Locker, Bigelow became the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Director, with the war movie also winning Best Picture. Zero Dark Thirty was also nominated for Best Picture, which bodes well for A House of Dynamite since it’s a similar political thriller. Bigelow also directed Oscar-nominated performances in both films from Jeremy Renner and Jessica Chastain, which could also bode well for those starring in A House of Dynamite.

Our Take On A House Of Dynamite’s Release Date

It’s Not A Sure Thing This Awards Season

With no trailer footage or early reviews available, it’s still too early to ᴀssess whether A House of Dynamite will be a major contender this awards season. Bigelow’s track record, especially with The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty, suggests that she knows how to deliver awards-caliber thrillers, and A House of Dynamite‘s October release date positions it well for an awards-season run. However, plenty of high-profile films arrive each fall with similar hopes. Until we see more, A House of Dynamite remains a promising but unproven contender for this awards season.
