Russell Crowe’s New Thriller About Nuremberg Trials Gets Release Date

Russell Crowe’s new thriller, Nuremberg, has received a release date. Written and directed by James Vanderbilt – known for writing Zodiac, The Amazing Spider-Man, Independence Day: Resurgence, and several Scream movies – the upcoming thriller tells the true story of the trials conducted by the Allied powers to prosecute the defeated Nazi leadership in Germany after World War II. In addition to Crowe, its star-studded ensemble cast includes Rami Malek, Leo Woodall, Michael Shannon, Richard E. Grant, Colin Hanks, John Slattery, and many more.

Now, the upcoming thriller has received a release date. According to Variety, Nuremberg has been set for a nationwide theatrical release on November 7 after Sony Pictures Classics secured the rights. The release date coincides with the 80th anniversary of the Nuremberg Trials.

What Nuremberg’s Release Date Means For The Movie

It’s Well-Timed For The Anniversary

Maximilian Schell in Judgment at Nuremberg

The movie’s release date is well-timed, considering that it coincides with the 80th anniversary of the Nuremberg Trials. Started on November 20, 1945, the Nuremberg Trials were conducted by the Allied powers to prosecute leaders of the defeated Nazi Germany for orchestrating and executing invasions throughout Europe and committing crimes against civilians during World War II. The Nuremberg Trials established accountability for war crimes, led to the convictions of several Nazi leaders, and set a precedent for international law and human rights.

The upcoming film is based on the 2013 non-fiction book The Nazi and the Psychiatrist by Jack El-Hai, and follows American psychiatrist Douglas Kelley (Rami Malek), who is tasked with interviewing Nazi prisoners to determine if they are fit to face trial for their war crimes. During the process, he finds himself in a “complex battle of wits” with Hitler’s right-hand man, Hermann Göring (played by Russell Crowe), the most notorious surviving Nazi and the primary focus of the trial.

Our Take On Nuremberg’s Release Date

It’s Also Well-Timed For Awards Season

By debuting in November, Nuremberg‘s release date not only coincides with the 80th anniversary of the military trial, but it also positions the film for a potential awards season run. Russell Crowe and Rami Malek are both Oscar winners, and Michael Shannon and Ricard E. Grant have both been nominated. It’s possible that they could be in awards season contention once again for Nuremberg, especially since historical dramas with serious subject matter have long been favored by voters, especially those dramatizing significant global events.

The Nuremberg trials were previously dramatized by the 2000 miniseries starring Alec Baldwin, Brian Cox, and Christopher Plummer.
