An underrated thriller from the 1990s has made the top 10 charts on Netflix, nearly 30 years after the hidden gem first debuted. The ’90s was a heyday for the thriller genre, and films like Silence of the Lambs are still considered some of the greatest films of the decade. Combining the chills of horror with the intrigue of cop dramas, the best thrillers are both frightening and compelling in equal measure. Though many proved to be blockbusters, and have stood the test of time, some high-profile thrillers from the ’90s have faded into obscurity.
As the film nears the 30-year mark, 1995’s Copycat has suddenly become a sleeper hit on Netflix and has found its way into the top 10. Flix Patrol notes that on June 18, the Sigourney Weaver and Holly Hunter vehicle reached number 9 on the American streaming charts. The modest box office success pᴀssed the comedy film, Get Hard, which has begun tumbling down the rankings since it made the charts earlier in June. Copycat is in rare company, and has made the list behind stalwarts like Despicable Me 4 and Straw.
What This Means For The Underrated 1990s Thriller
Almost Anything Can Become A Hit On Streaming
It’s difficult to predict exactly what will become a hit on streaming, but Copycat‘s overnight success certainly isn’t that surprising. The ’90s thriller is just the sort of movie that could gain popularity on streaming, and its intriguing premise goes along well with popular true crime programming that Netflix has produced in the past. It’s unclear how long the movie will stay on the chart, but Netflix’s top 10 is especially volatile, with a handful of movies sticking around for many weeks while most pop in and out of the ranking in just a few days.
Copycat currently holds a 76% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Our Take On Copycat’s Streaming Success On Netflix
It’s Nice To See A Great Movie Get More Attention
Copycat hardly set the world on fire when it first debuted back in the ’90s, and I’m glad to see that the underrated gem is finally getting the attention it deserves. With so much of the Netflix top 10 clogged up with original releases and blockbuster movies from the past decade, it’s nice that a movie like Copycat is able to crack the top 10, even if it isn’t expected to stay around for long. Sigourney Weaver and Holly Hunter are in rare form, and even Harry Connick is convincingly creepy.
Classic psychological thrillers have never gone out of style, but Copycat is a movie that flew under the radar in the past. Its success on Netflix can finally rectify that oversight, and it can take its place alongside the other popular thrillers that are still discussed today. Streaming platforms have helped to unearth more than a few hidden gems, and it appears as if Copycat is about to join that list.
