From the World of John Wick: Ballerina has just crossed a significant global box office milestone, but it’s not reaching the same heights as the John Wick sequels. Directed by Len Wiseman, the latest installment in the hit action franchise stars Ana de Armas as Eve Macarro, an ᴀssᴀssin who sets out for revenge following the murder of her father. De Armas is joined in the Ballerina cast by Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane, Anjelica Huston, and Gabriel Byrne, but these names weren’t enough to raise the film beyond a modest box office opening of $24 million domestically.
Per The Numbers, Ballerina has now crossed $95.1 million worldwide, comprising $45.4 million domestically and $49.7 million from overseas territories. As the film nears the $100 million mark, it still falls short of all the John Wick movies, save for the debut installment in 2014. Check out a chart of the franchise’s box office performance below:

What This Means For Ballerina
Will The John Wick Spinoff Be A Success?
Ballerina was made on an estimated budget of $90 million, a relatively large figure that is undoubtedly partially a result of the film’s reshoots. Using the standard Hollywood rule of thumb, the John Wick spinoff could be looking at a break-even point of $225 million. It’s now been just under two weeks since the movie hit theaters, meaning it still has a handful of weeks still to go in theaters, but it’s already looking very unlikely that the movie will hit this figure.
According to Box Office Mojo, Ballerina experienced a 60.2% dip at the box office in its second weekend compared to its first, a middle-of-the-road result that doesn’t suggest the film will have particularly strong legs moving forward. This is perhaps somewhat surprising given the audience response. Though Ballerina reviews from critics have been generally positive, the film enjoys a stunning 93% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, which can sometimes indicate strong word-of-mouth.
The box office percentage drop heading into weekend 3, June 20-22, will provide a better indication of how Ballerina will fare in the weeks ahead.
If Ballerina ends its run as a disappointment, this could affect the John Wick franchise’s future. It suggests Reeves as the movie’s central star is key to this franchise’s success. While this is great news for the announced John Wick: Chapter 5, it could limit what spinoffs get the green light in the years ahead after the impending Caine movie, including the potential Ballerina 2. At the very least, Ballerina‘s performance seems likely to result in lower budgets for future spinoffs.
Our Take On Ballerina’s New Box Office Milestone
Ana de Armas Elevates The Spinoff
While Ballerina may not reach the same highs as the acclaimed John Wick: Chapter 4, it features plenty of strong action and fight sequences. It also makes a compelling case for de Armas as an action star and as a continuing presence in the franchise, as the actor brings a convincing physicality to the role.
It’s a shame, then, that this John Wick spinoff isn’t making waves at the box office, and the film’s performance could determine whether Eve shows up again. It’s unclear where Ballerina‘s box office will end when the film’s theatrical run ends, but it seems unlikely to be a big hit.
