Despite Making 60% Less Box Office Than The Original, A DC Movie Sequel Has Become A Top Netflix Hit

Despite a lukewarm box office, a DC movie has now emerged as a Netflix hit. Following a decade of mixed reception, the DCEU movie timeline was brought to an end in 2023 by Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, with Arthur Curry becoming the final Justice League hero seen in the universe that began in 2013 with Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. Despite the first Aquaman movie making $1.15 billion when it came out in 2018, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom earned only $439 million at the worldwide box office.

According to data from Netflix’s Tudum, Jason Momoa’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom ended up in the top 10 for the period May 26 to June 1. According to the streaming platform, the DCEU finale is ranked no. 3, with 5.8 million views and 12 million hours viewed. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is ranked right after Fear Street: Prom Queen at no. 1 with 8.5 million views and 12.7 million hours viewed, while The Wild Robot is no. 2 at 5.8 million views and 9.9 million hours viewed.

What Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom’s Netflix Success Means

Although the Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom movie didn’t have a memorable box office outcome, seeing the DCEU’s final installment become a Netflix success benefits Warner Bros. Discovery. Despite Aquaman‘s sequel not being a hit during its theatrical run, there is still a huge audience for Momoa, who is having a good run in 2025. His film, A Minecraft Movie, has made $948 million at the worldwide box office, making it the second highest-grossing movie of the year so far. Even if those audience members didn’t catch Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in 2023, anyone who enjoyed Momoa in A Minecraft Movie may be looking for more content featuring the DCEU veteran.

However, even with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’s Netflix outcome, this doesn’t mean that Aquaman 3 is going to happen. Not only is the DCEU over, but Momoa is starting a new superhero chapter in his career, as the Game of Thrones star is set to appear in James Gunn’s DC Universe as Lobo in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. But just because Momoa’s Aquaman era is over, it doesn’t mean fans can’t continue to enjoy his work, which is why platforms like Netflix are a great benefit for a movie like Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom to get more exposure.

While it is certainly a surprise to see Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom making it this far on Netflix, Momoa is always enjoyable in so many of his roles, which explains how one of his films continues to find an audience even years after its theatrical run. It will be interesting to see if Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom remains in Netflix’s Top 10 in the coming weeks. Even though Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was his final time as the iconic Justice League character, fans can look forward to seeing Momoa back in the world of DC, starting in 2026 when he debuts as the DCU’s Lobo.
