Dorothy’s Role In Wicked: For Good Explained (Who Is Playing Her?)

As is expected, Dorothy will have a slightly larger role in Wicked: For Good than she had in the first film. Dorothy, Toto, The Tin Man, The Scarecrow, and The Cowardly Lion are all seen from behind walking down the Yellow Brick Road at the beginning of the first Wicked movie, which received immense acclaim upon its release in November 2024. This was the extent of Dorothy’s cameo in Wicked, though, since the film mostly focused on the friendship between Elphaba and Glinda. After the ending of Wicked, the sequel will intersect with the events of The Wizard of Oz.

The sequel will still mostly follow Elphaba and Glinda as they try to navigate both their friendship and the political landscape of the world of Oz, but Dorothy will have a more prominent role in the upcoming Wicked: For Good. Based on the first trailer for Wicked: For Good, it seems like we may even see Dorothy’s face in the movie, which would be a major change from the musical. Therefore, let’s take a look at what Dorothy’s role in Wicked: For Good will be and what actress may be playing her.

Dorothy’s Wicked: For Good Role Is A Change To The Musical

Dorothy Will Appear In Several Scenes In Wicked: For Good

While Dorothy is present in the Wicked musical, she is never actually seen. Instead, audience members only see a silhouette of the iconic character, who was originally played by Judy Garland in the 1939 film, in the Broadway musical. Even though her face is never seen, Dorothy’s most notable moment in the musical is when she throws water on Elphaba, who is known as the Wicked Witch of the West at this point in the story. However, based on the new trailer for the upcoming sequel, it seems like Dorothy will have more scenes in Wicked: For Good.

Dorothy is shown in two different scenes in the first trailer for Wicked: For Good. One sH๏τ in the trailer shows Dorothy walking down the Yellow Brick Road with Toto and a few unknown Ozians. Then, in another scene featured in the trailer, Dorothy and her companions from The Wizard of Oz actually meet with the Wizard. In this scene, the Wizard commands Dorothy and her friends to bring him the broom of the Wicked Witch of the West, which connects the movie to the plot of the classic 1939 film.

Wicked 2 Needs To Be Careful With Dorothy – And The Director Knows It

Since Dorothy does not speak with the Wizard in the musical, this meeting scene proves that Wicked: For Good is making some significant changes. Perhaps the sequel will jump between Dorothy’s adventures in the world of Oz and the ongoing story revolving around Elphaba, Glinda, and the film’s supporting characters. However, Wicked: For Good needs to be careful with its use of Dorothy since her presence could potentially distract from Elphaba and Glinda’s character arcs. Thankfully, Wicked: For Good’s director, Jon M. Chu, knows this. Speaking of Dorothy’s role in the sequel, Chu told Vanity Fair:

That intersection is the place that we were first introduced into Oz. We tread lightly, but try to make more sense of how it impacts our girls and our characters than maybe the show does. We’re delicate. We’re delicate. We’re delicate.

Based on Chu’s comments, it doesn’t seem like Wicked: For Good will overuse Dorothy or include her in any unnecessary scenes. Since the events of Wicked: For Good overlap with The Wizard of Oz’s story, it makes sense to include brief scenes of Dorothy and have other characters mention her, but she should not be a main character in the film. Thankfully, this doesn’t seem to be the case, but it’s possible that we will see Dorothy’s face in Wicked: For Good, which would be a significant change from the stageplay.

Dorothy’s Casting Isn’t Official – But One Actress Is Rumored

Who Will Take On Judy Garland’s Iconic Role In Wicked: For Good?

Since Dorothy will meet with the Wizard in Wicked: For Good, it would make sense for her face to be shown. At this point, an official casting for the character in the two Wicked movies has not been confirmed, but one specific actress has been heavily rumored to play Dorothy. After the release of Wicked and leading up to the release of the sequel, it has been rumored that Alisha Weir plays Dorothy in the movies. Weir actually reacted to these rumors, but remained coy about whether she is actually playing Dorothy. In an interview in February 2025, she said:

When I had seen it, I was like, “This is absolutely crazy,” and it was so crazy on social media and everybody was asking me. That would be wonderful. I’m such a big fan of Wicked and I saw the first one with my family. I’m such as fan of John Chu’s work and Ariana Grande and Cynthia but that would be pretty cool.

Weir is best known for playing the тιтular vampire in the 2024 horror film Abigail and the lead in 2022’s Matilda the Musical. Given her previous films, she would be a great choice to play Dorothy in Wicked: For Good. However, since her casting has not been confirmed, it’s possible that another actress is playing Dorothy in the Wicked movies. Regardless, it will be interesting to see what Dorothy’s role is when Wicked: For Good releases in theaters on November 21, 2025.
