Karate Kid: Legends Box Office Pᴀsses Major Domestic Milestone & Will Soon Climb Franchise’s Highest-Grossing Charts

Karate Kid: Legends has already had a legendary performance at the box office, and it just pushed through another major milestone. The sixth movie in franchise history, Legends stars Ben Wang as Li Fong, Jackie Chan as Mr. Han, and Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso. The film serves as a follow-up to both previous movies and the Cobra Kai spin-off TV show, which recently concluded its run on Netflix. While it took 15 years to see a sequel to 2010’s The Karate Kid, the movie has been performing admirably at the box office.

According to a report by Variety, the newest film in the franchise is continuing to climb its highest-grossing chart. The sequel is about to pᴀss $35 million at the domestic box office, despite facing stiff compeтιтion at the box office. Thanks to a projected $8.7 million weekend and a 57% drop, it is just $2-3 million away from overtaking The Karate Kid Part III, which would make it the fourth-highest-grossing movie in the history of the franchise.

What This Means For Karate Kid: Legend’s Box Office Chances

Profitability Is Extremely Likely

A $35 million domestic total through a movie’s second weekend is not necessarily an exciting prospect, but it is good news for Karate Kid: Legends. After all, this box office total should be weighed against the movie’s $40 million budget. When accounting for marketing costs and the cut that theaters take, it will need approximately $100 million to break even, and it is well on its way to achieving that goal. By maintaining a low but respectable budget, Sony ensured that it would see success. Compared to the other Karate Kid movies, it is doing remarkably well:

The Karate Kid Part III (1989)

Legends is only in its sophomore weekend and is already poised to become the fourth-highest movie in franchise history, despite facing stiff compeтιтion from Lilo & Sтιтch, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Ballerina, and Final Destination Bloodlines. This is also only the domestic total, and it will be combined with the $26 million international opening weekend, as well as anything the movie earns overseas this week. It will need to surpᴀss The Karate Kid (1984) to see success, but it should get there, thanks to the worldwide gross.

Our Take On Karate Kid: Legends’ Box Office Milestone

This Should Come As No Surprise

Audiences are undoubtedly still interested in Karate Kid, given the success of Cobra Kai. This franchise has captured the imagination for decades, and it continues to prove the worth of martial arts movies today. Despite some mixed reviews from critics, audiences responded far better, with a record 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Karate Kid: Legends earned a strong review, with ScreenRant‘s Mae Abdulbaki calling it “genuinely charismatic” and a crowd-pleasing film that will make you feel good.

If the sequel can hit the box office line to become a success, it will bode well for the Karate Kid future. Even though Karate Kid: Legends earned a strong reception from audiences, the box office will ultimately become the deciding factor if there is a chance of more movies. Nevertheless, after Cobra Kai‘s ending, this franchise needed a win, and it is truly exciting to see this movie continuing to climb the franchise’s overall charts.
