Glinda & Fiyero’s Wedding In Wicked: For Good Trailer Looks Like A Copycat Of $239M Rom-Com

The Wicked: For Good trailer showcases a glimpse of Glinda and Fiyero’s upcoming nuptials, and the ceremony looks achingly familiar. Wicked: For Good will continue the epic story of Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda’s (Ariana Grande) tumultuous friendship and Elphaba’s quest to unmask the Wizard of Oz (Jeff Goldblum). As tensions grow in Oz and Elphaba is branded public enemy number one, Glinda embeds herself deeper with the Wizard and Madam Morrible (Michelle Yeoh), climbing the ranks of society as Glinda the Good Witch, and she’s not the only one who’s been elevated in society.

Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey) has become Captain of the Guard, pitting him directly against Elphaba despite their love for one another. Though Glinda’s intentions towards Fiyero have been obvious since the start, Fiyero’s true feelings are another matter. Unless it turns out to be an elaborate dream sequence, their wedding, orchestrated by Madame Morrible, will play a pivotal role in Wicked: For Good’s story. Given its likely importance in the narrative, it’s no wonder director Jon M. Chu went all out for this scene, but it’s strikingly similar to a sequence in one of his other major blockbuster films.

Wicked: For Good Trailer Reveals The First Look At Glinda & Fiyero’s Wedding

It’s Clearly A Beautiful Occasion

The sH๏τs of Glinda and Fiyero’s wedding in the Wicked: For Good trailer are stunning. Ariana Grande’s dress, crown, and lengthy veil are undeniably regal, and the ʙuттerflies, lighting, flowers, the shining aisle, and colorful guests all add to the world’s fantastical, magical feel. Given what we know about Glinda – she loves to beautify everything and everyone – her wedding was bound to be a spectacle, but the Wizard’s propaganda team has seemingly outdone itself. The only thing that’s missing is a genuinely happy groom.

Ariana Grande’s dress, crown, and lengthy veil are undeniably regal, and the ʙuттerflies, lighting, flowers, the shining aisle, and colorful guests all add to the world’s fantastical, magical feel.

In the stage musical, Glinda and Fiyero never actually make it to their wedding day, as Elphaba disrupts their engagement celebrations long before a wedding can take place. Changing Elphaba’s timeline slightly and (presumably) moving her disruption to the wedding instead will lend Wicked‘s second act so much emotional weight. Fiyero’s only in attendance because he’s trying to protect the ones he loves, and if Elphaba is the one he loves the most, how will her breaking up his doomed wedding affect his choices?

Glinda & Fiyero’s Wedding Looks Similar To The One In Crazy Rich Asians

Even The Camera Angles Are Nearly Identical

This isn’t the first time Jon M. Chu has directed a gorgeous, imaginative wedding scene. In the 2018 blockbuster romantic dramedy Crazy Rich Asians, the leading couple attends a high-profile wedding in Singapore. The movie, which earned a worldwide total of $239 million at the box office on a respectable $30 million budget, includes one of the most over-the-top yet beautiful wedding scenes ever put to film. Flowers in every corner, the guests wave around ʙuттerfly lights, the lighting is colorful yet subtle, and the bride walks down an aisle of water.

Of course, the wedding in Crazy Rich Asians had to be fancy and memorable; the characters getting married were part of one of the richest families in Singapore, even the world. It couldn’t look like a standard wedding, the same way Wicked‘s upcoming wedding couldn’t look like a run-of-the-mill ceremony. Chu’s focus on color and lighting, and how both films frame the bride’s walk down the aisle, maximizes how much the viewer sees of the intricate decorations and setting, and gives each scene that grand, unattainable atmosphere.

Jon M. Chu Clearly Has A Specific Vision When It Comes To Weddings

They Always Look Grand & Colorful

Jon M. Chu certainly has a knack for crafting mᴀssive, life-altering weddings. They have a dream-like feel, an ethereal quality that’s hard to replicate. In some ways, the wedding in Crazy Rich Asians feels like it’s straight out of a fantasy movie despite being part of a contemporary romantic comedy, and that’s exactly the kind of touch that Wicked needed, too. Both films are essentially fairy tales, after all, just in vastly different ways. If the rest of Wicked: For Good looks as mesmerizing as Glinda and Fiyero’s doomed wedding, we’re in for a visual treat.

Wicked: For Good will be released in theaters on November 21.
