Avengers: Doomsday Has The Chance To Fix The Biggest X-Men Movie Mistake From 20 Years Ago

A big X-Men movie mistake from the original Fox series can be rectified in Avengers: Doomsday. Throughout 2024 and 2025, a significant amount of information and details about Avengers: Doomsday have been released. While the overall plot of the movie remains shrouded in mystery, the full confirmation of Avengers: Doomsday‘s cast list came almost a year after Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU was confirmed alongside the Russo Brothers.

These announcements, combined with the reveal that Avengers: Doomsday has been delayed, have only shed more light on the mᴀssive upcoming project. The film will focus on several teams from across the Marvel multiverse coming together to face off against Doctor Doom, with one such team being the X-Men. Although not the same X-Men from the Fox movie timeline, Avengers: Doomsday can fix one character’s depiction from that universe in a key way.

The Fox X-Men Movies Failed To Realize Rogue’s True Potential

Rogue Was Misused In Fox’s X-Men Movies

Despite not being confirmed as part of Avengers: Doomsday‘s cast as of yet, the character whom the X-Men movies failed was Rogue. Rogue was played by Anna Paquin in the original X-Men trilogy, yet the character was drastically different in some ways from her comic book counterpart. For one, Rogue was essentially the “everyman” character who served as the eyes and ears of the audience when joining the X-Men in the first movie.

Beyond that, though, the biggest disservice to Rogue in the original X-Men series was the change to her power set. While her siphoning abilities were present, they were often depicted as a curse or a hindrance in order to streamline the character with emotional sympathy. A big part of her comic book character – the siphoning of Carol Danvers’ Ms. Marvel powers – was not present. As a result, Paquin’s Rogue became a character with much less agency than other iterations of Rogue.

Avengers: Doomsday Can Finally Give Rogue Her Comic-Accurate Powers

Rogue’s Redemption Could Be Possible

Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige has continuously hinted that some big missing actors from Avengers: Doomsday will be confirmed at a later date. Anna Paquin could be one such actor, with Rogue being an important member of the X-Men. If this comes to fruition, Avengers: Doomsday can finally portray Rogue in live-action with her comic-accurate powers.

The X-Men movies also faced licensing issues in depicting Rogue with Captain Marvel’s powers, which Marvel Studios can avoid.

The MCU multiverse has never been bigger, and Carol Danvers is a major character in the franchise. If Rogue appears, it would make more sense than ever to give her the powers of Carol Danvers, even if they were siphoned from a different Captain Marvel variant from the MCU’s Brie Larson version. This way, Rogue can play a much more active role in the plot and have a lot more agency than she did in the original X-Men trilogy.

The MCU Has Already Proven How Great Rogue’s Comic-Accurate Powers Can Be

The Best MCU TV Show Is A Testament To This

If all of this becomes a reality in Avengers: Doomsday, the MCU would be doubling down on how great a comic-accurate Rogue can be. In 2024, X-Men ’97 aired on Disney+ and quickly became regarded as one of the MCU’s best TV shows. The characters in that show, which continued on from X-Men: The Animated Series, have never been better, Rogue included.

The show depicted the full range of Rogue’s Ms. Marvel powers, complete with an incredibly impactful storyline from an emotional standpoint. Rogue’s relationships with Gambit and Magneto were outlined, as was her rage and need for revenge after the former’s death. By the time of X-Men ’97 season 1’s ending, Rogue was a standout character, especially above Paquin’s version. With Avengers: Doomsday on the horizon, Marvel’s creatives have already proven to themselves why the film should fix the issues found with Rogue in the Fox movies.
