Chris Evans & Pedro Pascal’s New Romance Movie Debuts To Promising Rotten Tomatoes Score

Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal‘s new romance movie debuts to a promising Rotten Tomatoes score. Evans is best known for playing Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, debuting in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger and exiting after 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Since exiting the MCU, his career has suffered significantly – starring in a series of poorly received movies such as The Gray Man, Ghosted, Pain Hustlers, and Red One – though he’s looking to rebound with his upcoming roles in Ethan Coen’s Honey Don’t! and other movies.

Pascal, on the other hand, has enjoyed a meteoric rise in recent years, and he’s only due for an even bigger breakout with his upcoming roles. Following the blockbuster Gladiator II and his Emmy-nominated performance as Joel in HBO’s The Last of Us, Pascal stars in A24’s Eddington releasing on July 18, makes his MCU debut as Reed Richards in The Fantastic Four: First Steps releasing on July 25, and reprises his role as Din Djarin in The Mandalorian and Grogu movie releasing in May 2026. However, it’s Evans and Pascal’s new romance movie that’s been receiving rave reviews.

Materialists Debuts To A Promising Rotten Tomatoes Score

Chris Evans & Pedro Pascal’s New Romance Movie Releases On June 13

Materialists has debuted with a promising Rotten Tomatoes score. Written and directed by Celine Song, who made her debut with Past Lives in 2023, the upcoming A24 romantic comedy stars Dakota Johnson as a driven matchmaker in New York City who finds herself torn between her perfect match (played by Pedro Pascal) and her imperfect ex (Chris Evans). Led by the aforementioned trio, Materialists‘ cast also includes Zoë Winters, Marin Ireland, Dasha Nekrasova, Louisa Jacobson, Sawyer Spielberg, Eddie Cahill, Joseph Lee, and John Magaro.

Now, a few days before its release, Materialists has debuted to a promising 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes with 28 reviews at the time of writing. Its score was initially 90-91%, but is settling a bit and should still shift as more reviews are added. The movie doesn’t yet have an audience score, though it will begin to take shape once it releases in theaters in just a few days.

What Materialists’ Rotten Tomatoes Score Means For The Movie

What Are The Reviews Saying?

Materialists‘ Rotten Tomatoes means that its reviews are mostly positive. For instance, in ScreenRant‘s Materialists review, Molly Freeman writes, “Celine Song’s Past Lives follow-up completely wowed me with its unique perspective on beloved romance tropes… Materialists puts a fresh spin on some of the most classic hallmarks of the romance movie genre to craft a beautiful tale of love.”

Overall, Materialists is seen as an ambitious, unique, and thematically rich rom-com.

Otherwise, Materialists is mostly earning praise for being a sharp, thoughtful twist on rom-com tropes with career-best, scene-stealing performances from Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal, while Celine Song’s writing and direction offer emotional depth and biting social commentary. However, there are a few critics who find it shallow, unfocused, or preachy. Overall, Materialists is seen as an ambitious, unique, and thematically rich rom-com.

Materialists releases in theaters on June 13.
