I’m Convinced The тιтan With The Strongest Power In The Monsterverse Will Die In Godzilla X Kong: Supernova

Ever since the тιтle of Godzilla X Kong: Supernova was revealed, theories have flown about significant plot points, one of which could revolve around the death of one of the Monsterverse’s most powerful тιтans. Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire saw the Monsterverse’s two alpha тιтans take on a doppelgänger duo in Skar King and Shimo, another Great Ape тιтan and an ice dragon тιтan. The conflict resulted in Skar King’s death and Shimo’s liberation from Skar King’s control and alliance with Kong, leaving all the Monsterverse’s main characters with a happy ending.

However, the upcoming movie’s тιтle hints towards a far less enjoyable future for both Godzilla and Kong. While virtually nothing has been revealed aside from some teaser footage that appeared with the тιтle announcement, Godzilla X Kong: Supernova‘s тιтle hints that a cosmic villain could find its way to Earth. If it’s one of the existing cosmic villains from Godzilla’s rogues’ gallery, then the alpha тιтans will be faced with their biggest threat since Ghidorah was released from Antarctica. Unfortunately, that could make the death of one of the planet’s strongest тιтans more likely.

Shimo Likely Doesn’t Survive Godzilla X Kong: Supernova

Kong’s New Sidekick Is Too Great An ᴀsset

Shimo towers over Kong in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

The ending of Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire saw the newly-freed Shimo essentially become a pet for Kong, nuzzling him while he scratched her chin like a faithful dog. After centuries of torturous servitude under Skar King’s nefarious rule, Shimo is now free to make her own choices, but she doesn’t seem to have a ton of autonomy when compared to the more intelligent тιтans like Godzilla, Kong, or Mothra. Shimo now seems like she’s little more than a point-and-shoot weapon for Kong, albeit as a result of kindness instead of pain.

That level of power in the hands of one of the smartest (and certainly one of the strongest) тιтans on the planet is too great an advantage for any villain to be taken seriously as a threat. With Shimo allied with Kong and theoretically Evolved Godzilla against a common enemy (although he may need to power up again), it would be difficult for any monster to truly stand against them. That makes Shimo suddenly seem extremely expendable, and taking her away from Kong and Godzilla as an ally would help make a new villain more viable as a world-destroyer.

Shimo’s Death Actually Makes Sense For The Story

Killing Shimo Would Establish The Next Great Threat

Shimo in Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire

In fact, Shimo’s death might be the best thing for the overall narrative. The New Empire made it explicitly clear that Shimo was one of the strongest тιтans to ever walk the Earth, and that her Frost Bite Blast was the single most devastating attack in the Monsterverse. Her icy breath was responsible for the last Ice Age, and she was on her way towards creating another in Rio before Godzilla and Kong stopped her. She was even strong enough to defeat Ghidorah, as it was Shimo who froze Ghidorah in Antarctica centuries before Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

Shimo’s existence was first teased as a cave drawing on a wall in the Call of Duty video game franchise’s 2022 collaboration with Godzilla vs. Kong.

What better way to establish a new threat than by having them take out the single greatest non-Godzilla threat to their conquest of Earth? Whether the new villain is SpaceGodzilla, Gigan, Hedorah, or a new space тιтan, killing Shimo right from the jump would be a brilliant way to paint them as a greater threat than anything the Monsterverse has seen yet. That’s an admittedly high bar with Ghidorah and Mechagodzilla already represented, so a new villain would need to do something drastic to justify another Godzilla and Kong team-up; killing Shimo would certainly accomplish that.

A Major тιтan Death Would Enhance The Monsterverse

The Monsterverse Needs To Establish Some Stakes

The madcap monster melees of Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire are a far cry from the relatively grounded Godzilla of 2014, and as a result, the Monsterverse has gotten a little off the rails as far as stakes are concerned. To be clear, that’s the whole point and charm of the Monsterverse: it shows a different side of Godzilla and his тιтanic chums when compared to the exquisite drama of Godzilla Minus One, for example. But after a zero-gravity tag-team battle and a тιтan-sized robotic weaponized gauntlet, the Monsterverse could use a splash of cold reality.

A major тιтan death could be exactly what the Monsterverse needs to ground it a little bit without sacrificing the immersive, entertaining fun of Legendary’s shared cinematic universe. It seems unlikely that Kong or Godzilla would die given their status as box office darlings, but killing a side character like Shimo would still provide the necessary gravitas of a major death, especially given the bond that she shares with Kong. It’s still too early for real details about Godzilla X Kong: Supernova, but the death of Shimo seems like a legitimate possibility.
